Leah is doing great! She is now fifteen and continues to be cancer free. Praise the Lord! She is in 10th grade and continues to be home schooled. She currently volunteers at the Greenwood Mennonite school once a week as a teacher aide. She has yearly checkups through the Survivorship program at the Oncology clinic at A.I. DuPont.

Her favorite scripture continues to be Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have you", declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future."

She continues to annually support the Light the Night Walk through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She annually participates in this fundraising walk. Her team Jeremiah 29:11 made a banner this year and raised over $750.00.

Her favorite thing is to cuddle up with her dog A.J. He is a large Boston Terrier. <3

Her brother, Andrew, is a senior at Polytech this year. He continues to love playing the guitar and plays on the Adult and Teen Worship band at church.

FINALLY AN UPDATE ON THE DIXON FAMILY:

Where do I begin?

Leah is 29 months off of treatments and remains in remission!!!!! Praise the Lord!

Leah is in 7th grade this year. With much prayer and consulting from our friends, we decided to home school her again this year. We continue to do her work on the computer using the Switched on Schoolhouse curriculum. She volunteers once a week at a consignment shop in Denton. She likes it. She also is volunteering some time at the S.P.C.A. She does a variety of things there, including helping in the surgical room. She loves it. We are trying to get more dates per a month for her to volunteer there.

Leah does face daily learning challenges and some social fear issues due to late effects from the chemo that she was on. This can be frustrating for her at times, but we know that we can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens us. We continue to believe for a complete healing in these areas for Leah. We are proud of our Leah. She has been through so much, but keeps on going.

Andrew is now in 9th grade and is attending Polytech High School. He thinks he would like to take auto body. The first year at Polytech they have the students attend a small portion of time in all the shops. This way they can make sure of what trade/career they would like to pursue. Andrew is making out just fine. He is learning and maturing much. He is also going to do basketball too.

Andrew continues to play the guitar in the teen worship band at church. He loves to play the guitar. He has even played with the regular worship team on Sunday mornings. We are so proud of him.

Dale and I are doing just fine. Dale continues to work at Prison Industries. I continue to work part time for my step-mom. She has a small accounting business. So if you need help doing your taxes this year, let us know. (smile). Working part time allows me to still be able to home school Leah. I am so thankful for this opportunity.

Please pray for my step-dad, Tom. He has been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and needs a healing. He also needs guidance on what type of treatments he should pursue. We know that God is faithful and he can heal him!

Lets also pray for all our unsaved loved ones. Surely, it is the end times and we need to have ourselves ready for the rapture.

Again, thank you for all your prayers and support for our family. We could not of made this journey without you. We love and appreciate you all.

Sincerely,

Vickie Dixon

April 13, 2007.... Just a quick update.

Its hard to believe that it has been 2 years that Leah has been off of treatments and remains cancer free.
Praise the Lord!

Leah will be 12 on May 23rd and has grown into a beautiful young lady.
She continues to excel in her school work.

I know she would love to hear from you.
Send her a birthday card.

Warm Regards,
Mom Mom Cohee

-------------------------------------------
Greetings in the name of the Lord!

As many of you already know, Leah Dixon is a cancer survivor from Leukemia. She is now eleven years old and is 17 months off of treatments. She remains cancer free. Praise God!

Once again, Leah has made a commitment to participate in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk.
The Light the Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening fundraising walk where walkers carry illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate the many lives touched by cancer (Red balloons show support and white balloons show survivorship). This year's walk will be held Saturday, October 14th at the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Registration starts at 5:00p.m. and the walk begins at 7:00p.m.

Leah is forming a group that will walk at The Light the Night Walk. Once again, her group will be called Jeremiah 29:11. (This is the scripture the Lord gave Leah for encouragement through her cancer journey.) She has a goal to raise $1000.00 for the walk.

Leah is looking for people that would like to help by participating in the walk and/or donating money to the walk. Could you please help?

Your support will help save lives. Leukemia alone causes more deaths among children under 15 than any other disease in the country. Leukemia strikes 10 times as many adults as children. Someone new is diagnosed with a blood related cancer every 5 minutes; someone dies every 9 minutes.

Leah hopes you'll join her group or donate to this worthy cause. Any checks should be made out to The Delaware Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and mailed to us at 3058 Deep Grass Lane, Houston, DE, 19954. Please feel free to call me at (302)424-4733 with any questions.

Remember, monies will be used to fund medical research, support government advocacy and patient assistance programs, advance medical education, and provide critical information to the general public.

Yours truly,

Vickie Dixon
(Leah's Mom)

NOW AN UPDATE ON THE KIDS:

We are doing great! School is going just fine. We are homeschooling with a new curriculum and the kids love it. It is called Switch on Schoolhouse. It is a complete multimedia computer curriculum.

Andy is volunteering some time at a local farm. He works one day a week for about four hours. He collects eggs from the hen houses, picks produce, and helps any way needed. He loves it. The farm is about 2 1/2 miles away and Andy rides his bike there. He likes the freedom and the responsibility. He is growing up to be a fine young man.

Leah is doing great too. She took a field trip with her Sunday School class to the Cape May Zoo. She rode the ferry and spent the night over her Sunday School teacher's house. They had a blast.

We have a check up at A.I. Dupont on October 20th. Leah is doing great healthwise. The only complaints have been some bone pain. I think it is growing pains. She has been growing taller. I will have them check her out at her appointment. I'm not concerned yet. (Smile)

Please continue to pray for Terri (my sister), and nieces. They are struggling at times with the loss of Alan. Terri and Alan were high school sweethearts. Please pray that the Lord will comfort them and heal their broken hearts.

Please pray for my pastor's wife, Brenda. Please pray that the Lord will comfort her and give her strength day to day.

Please agree with me and pray for Kevin. He is a teenager who has leukemia and is ongoing treatments. He lives in New York. I pray that the side effects will be to a minimum and that the Lord will give his mom, Lisa, strength each day to complete this journey. I pray that the Lord will meet each need that they have. I curse every cancer cell in his body and claim a complete healing in his body in the name of Jesus.

Please agree with me and pray for a friend's son, Tim. He has Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He has relapsed during treatment. Pray that the Lord will give his mom, Laurie, strength through this journey. Pray that Tim will go into a complete remission and stay in remission. I curse every cancer cell in his body and speak life and healing throughout his body in the name of Jesus. I curse those masses in his lungs in the name of Jesus and claim healthy tissue in his lungs. I command that extra fluid around his heart to be removed in the name of Jesus.

Thank you all for your continued faithfulness in keeping us uplifted before the Lord. We love and appreciate you all.

And pray that our heavenly Father will give doctors the knowledge and wisdom to find a cure for cancer. He sent his word (Jesus) to heal all our diseases.

In Christ,

Vickie Dixon

PRAISE THE LORD!!!!! LEAH IS DOING GREAT!!!! Doesn't she look beautiful?

Long time no hear, huh? Sorry!!!

As you can see in the picture Leah is doing great! We have finished school and are enjoying our summer. Leah is getting ready to go to the American Cancer Camp tomorrow. She is excited and scared all at the same time.
She had her oncology appointment last week and her counts are great. Edie, her oncology physician assistant, is pleased with Leah's health. We don't go back until October.

Dale took Andy and his friend, Andrew to the Demolition Derby at the Delaware State Fair. They enjoyed themselves. Andy asked if he could enter in the derby when he gets older. I said "NO!" (SMILE)

We as a family have decided to home school this coming school year. The kids seem excited and Dale is glad to see me home. We are all less stressed and returning to health. (SMILE) I am working part time from home doing some bookkeeping work for my step mom Joan. What a privilege to be able to work from home and work it around the home school schedule!!! Thank you Jesus!!!

Many of you don't know that our pastor, Harold Daniels, and our brother-in-law, Alan, past away a couple of months ago due to cancer. Thank you all for your prayers. We really have appreciated your support.

In April, my doctor put me on medical leave for the remainder of the school year. She said I was a walking dead woman. She explained that I was now a diabetic with extremely high blood pressure, high cholesterol, extremely low good cholesterol and that I was 5 times at risk for a stroke. (As well as you know I am over weight.) I also was having panic/anxiety attacks. This was all around when my brother in law, Alan, past away. She explained to me it was time to take care of me. Leah is doing better and now it was time to take care of me. She said to remove the stress!!!

Since that terrible report (3 months), I saw my doctor last week and I am doing GREAT NOW! I have lost 30 pounds, my blood sugars are under control, my blood pressure is normal, my cholesterol is down 30 points, and I am still working on raising my good cholesterol. She said that my lab work showed that I am no longer at risk for a stroke. PRAISE THE LORD!!!!! I am feeling a whole lot better.

Since we have removed the stress and have been eating healthy, Dale's cholesterol has dropped 50 points. He has lost 10 pounds too. Andy's cholesterol is normal now and he has lost 18 pounds. Leah has lost five pounds. She continues to grow taller. Andy has bypassed mom and dad in height and is 5' 10 1/2'' tall now. And he continues to grow.

So we are all doing GREAT!!!

P.S. --We are planning to do the Light the Night walk again this year. It will be held at Rehoboth Beach in October. Remember this is a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Last year was the first year Leah finished walking the whole walk by herself. The year before that she finished half of the race. The year before that, we pushed her in a stroller. This year her goal is to finish the walk again. Please come out and join our team. We again are calling our group Jeremiah 29:11. If you are interested in helping our group please start collecting funds and sponsors for the walk now (checks are to be made out to the Delaware Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). Also send me an email dvdixon@peoplepc.com) letting me know if you plan to walk with us. I will send out more information soon. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I KNOW IT HAS BEEN A WHILE FOR AN UPDATE----------LIFE HAS BEEN EXTREMELY CRAZY LATELY---------SORRY!

Leah is doing fine. She continues to be in remission. Her counts are doing great. We get labs at home in March and go back to A.I. Dupont in April. Thank you JESUS!!!!!

This school year has been a challenge for all of us. Leah has been working very hard this year and has continued to do 2 to 3 hours of homework on a regular basis. Most of the time I work side by side with her. She has kept mostly an "A" average. If you only knew what she does to keep these grades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She continues to struggle with cognitive issues due to her treatments; however, I can see some positive changes in her since the beginning of school!! PRAISE the LORD!!!! Dale and I have had to go to the battlefield on behalf of Leah to have some adjustments made at school in reference to homework work load and some other issues. It is on the second half of the school year and I think things are much smoother than they have been for Leah. We continue to have communication with her teacher on a daily basis to keep things running smoothly.

Leah has struggled at times emotionally this year as well. I think she is just mentally and physically exhausted with the rat race of life this year. God is our strength and refuge. We are prayerfully considering what will be best for her and our family next school year.

Andy has grown to be such a nice young man. He has past mom and dad in height. He has done great this school year. He played soccer in the fall and basketball this winter. He has been a big help to me in my classroom this year and at home. We are so proud of him!

Dale and I are exhausted and ask that you please pray for strength to keep up with this school year's rat race. We also would like for you to pray that God would show us what he would have us to do for next school year. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PRAYERS.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!URGENT PRAYERS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alan, my brother in law, continues with chemotherapy treatments. He finished his radiation treatments and the brain tumor appears to be gone with only scar tissue left. The tumors in his lungs have reduced in size slightly. Please keep him in prayer for salvation and complete healing. God has had his hand upon him on a daily basis. Thank you God for your mercy and compassion.

Also, our pastor, Pastor Daniels, has had a relapse and his cancer has returned. It has returned suddenly and rapidlly!! Please pray for his complete healing and restoration so the Lord can receive the glory. We curse every cancer cell in the name of Jesus and claim healing in his body!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR LOVE, COMPASSION, AND PRAYERS. WE LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOU ALL.

**********************URGENT REQUEST****************************
Please pray for my brother-in-law, Alan. He has officially been diagnosed with melanoma and a brain tumor. He and my sister need salvation and he needs a healing. He is taking chemotherapy and radiation. We have given him a hat with pins on it from Leah and Annie. We call this his courage hat. The pins represent people caring and praying for Alan. *******COULD YOU PLEASE SEND HIM A PIN TO PUT ON HIS COURAGE HAT? He needs to know people care about him and are praying for him. His address is: Alan Littlefield, 29 East St., Camden, DE 19934. This would mean a lot to Alan and me. THANKS! I curse every cancer cells in the name of Jesus. I speak healing through out Alan's body now in the name of Jesus. Thank you Lord for what you are doing in Alan's life right now.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Leah went to the American Cancer Camp in August with her friend (who is also a cancer survivor) Annie. They had a great time. Last year Leah came home with pneumonia and this year she came home healthy, tired, and happy from all the fun!!!!

Her counts are doing fine. A couple of weeks before school started Andy picked up scarlet fever and Leah picked up Strep with a terrible ear infection. They have both recovered. Praise the Lord for his healing hand. He continues to watch over Leah and Andy. We go back to A.I. Dupont again on September 16th. She continues to regain strength and hair! (Smile)

We are back to school!!!!!! School started August 29th. Andy is adjusting to being in 7th grade and having five teachers. He has entered the big leagues now! (Smile) He can’t believe he has so many reports and essays due all at the same time. He is coping and maturing into such a fine young man. His birthday is September 8th and he will be 13. Wow! Where did the time go? By the way, he is now taller than his mom and fast approaching dad. He reminds me often of how he is taller than me.

Leah is in 5th grade. The first couple of days she hated school! She says Mrs. Barron is not like Mrs. Thompson or Miss Hunter. She realizes it is a lot of work ahead of her this year, but we can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens us. By the middle of the week she didn’t complain anymore about school and by the end of the week she was having a good time. She has to do a lot of work in 5th grade. She was supposed to have 4 quizzes on the first Friday. One quiz was postponed to next week and she took the other 3. We will get the outcomes next week. Leah has to work very had to get good grades. Before her chemo things came easier for her. We have to be innovative on ways to get her to retain and learn the information. This takes extra work on mom, dad, Andy, and Leah. Giving her information all at once can be overwhelming. We recently took her history terms and made them into a puzzle where she puts the terms with the definitions. She mixes up the puzzle pieces and matches them up. So far she is learning them. We will see how she does on her first history quiz this week. Pray that the Lord will give mom, dad, Andy, and Leah strength to do all our regular chores, jobs, and keep up with homework. (Remember I am a teacher and I have homework for my class every night too.) Please pray that Leah’s comprehension, cognitive skills, and memory continues to be restored and grow stronger.

We are planning to do the Light the Night walk again this year. It will be held at Rehoboth Beach on October 15th. Remember this is a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Last year Leah finished walking half of the walk. The year before we pushed her in a stroller. This year her goal is to finish the walk. Please come out and join our team. We again are calling our group Jeremiah 29:11. Also send me an email (dvdixon@peoplepc.com) letting me know you plan to walk with us. I will send out more information soon. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for your continued faithfulness in keeping us uplifted before the Lord. We love and appreciate you all.

Please continue to pray for Janella. She has finished her chemotherapy for breast cancer. Pray that she remains in remission. Continue to pray for Bridgett, Peter, Ike, and Deuce to remain in remission too. Thank you Jesus for keeping them in remission!! Your are such a good God!!!

Please continue to keep Breezy's parents in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their beautiful Brianna. Barbara and Bruce are doing well. We all miss Brianna!!!!!

Please pray for Lizzy's parents, as they mourn the loss of their precious Lizzy. She is now in heaven playing with Breezy!!

Please pray for Ed and Alma. Their son Ron past away. He was an adult with childhood leukemia. We send our sincere condolences.

Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer.

And pray that our heavenly Father will give doctors the knowledge and wisdom to find a cure for cancer. He sent his word (Jesus) to heal all our diseases.

In Christ,

Vickie Dixon

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

Thank you all for your continued faithfulness in keeping us uplifted before the Lord. We love and appreciate you all.

WE ARE SO SORRY WE HAVE NOT UPDATED IN A WHILE!!!!!

We all are doing great! We are enjoying our summer and not ready to go back to school yet. (smile)

As many of you already know, Leah has finished her chemotherapy treatments as of the end of April 2005. We have had two follow up appointments since then and her blood work has been great! Her last blood work showed Leah's immunoglobin levels to be better than an average kid. WOW! Praise the Lord!

Leah continues with monthly blood work and monthly check ups. She will finish her last breathing treatment in July. Our next visit is July 22nd.

Leah continues to detox from her chemotherapy. She has experienced some rashes and eczema. She continues to build strength and muscle mass with aqua therapy. For the summer she is doing aqua therapy at home in our new pool. (We got it to celebrate Leah's victory and for her to exercise, exercise, and exercise this summer.

Leah is experiencing some verbal comprehension problems and we are closely watching this and trying to help her anyway we can. (This is due to the chemo side effects.) We know God can take care of this too. So pray that Leah will have a full recovery with no learning disabilities from all the medications she has had to take. We have been told that this type of thing can show up as late as seven years after treatments. I am fully leaving this in God's hands because it is too big for my shoulders to carry.

Please pray for my brother-in-law, Alan. He is going through some testing right now. They feel he may have pancreatic cancer. They have found a tumor on his pancreas and two tumors on his lungs. Please pray and believe with me that these are benign tumors. I believe God can remove these tumors before he has the biopsy surgery. I curse these tumors in the name of Jesus. I speak healing through out Alan's body now in the name of Jesus. Thank you Lord for what you are doing in Alan's life right now.

What a busy season it has been for us!! Leah went on April 20, 2005 for her last IV chemo treatment and immunogloblin transfusion. She will end the other oral chemo on this Sunday night and end her last dose of steroids on Monday morning. Leah is so excited!!!! We will keep everyone posted.

Also Leah has been asked by the Delaware Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to be their patient hero for the Pennies for Patients fundraiser. This is a fundraiser that is done through all of Delaware schools to collect pennies and money for the society. Leah's picture, story and a drawing will be on a full color poster to be sent throughout Delaware. What a privilege!!!!

WHAT WONDERFUL NEWS WE HAVE TO SHARE:

Leah went to see her orthopedic doctor for her six month checkup on Tuesday, 2/15. The doctor took xrays and found that the curvature in her spine has improved from 21 degrees to 14 degrees. PRAISE THE LORD!!! We will go back in six months for another check up for this.

On Friday, 2/18, we went for Leah's monthly appointment. Leah's immunogloblin blood proteins were low and she had to get a transfusion. She was pretreated with Tylenol and the transfusion went well. The transfusion took almost six hours. She also had labs, IV chemo, and a check up. During her check up, the physician assistant made a surprising discovery! She informed us that the Nurse Case Manager had made a mistake and had given us too many pages for our treatment road map. The road maps that the Nurse Case Manager had given us showed that we would be ending treatments in September. The physician assistant confirmed with the case study research department that we will be ending at the end of April. YES, THIS APRIL 2005!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!

As of the end of April, Leah will be off of all chemo medicines. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will have to continue her breathing treatments until July and be seen monthly for labs and check ups. We will also continue with the metabolic doctor, orthopedic doctor, and hopefully aquatic therapy. Leah loves the aquatic therapy. She has been going twice a week for her right leg. This has been so beneficial for her right leg and so much more. It is building her muscles while she is having fun!

Dale and I go back to A.I. Dupont on February 24th to go over Leah's neuropsychological evaluation. We are curious to have the results. We will let you know an update on this.

Leah goes back to A.I. Dupont on March 18th for labs, breathing treatment, oncology checkup, IV Chemo, immunoglobin transfusion, and an appointment with her metabolic doctor. She will later return to A.I. Dupont on April 22nd for labs, breathing treatment, oncology checkup, and her LAST dose of IV chemo. She returns on April 26th for a bone marrow biopsy and her LAST spinal tap. All oral chemos will be stopped on April 24th. PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!

Leah is so excited!!!!! She said, "Oh, Mommy! It's before my birthday in May! My hair will start growing back without me losing it again!!!"

Please keep a gentleman named Ron in your prayers. He was diagnosed with children's acute lymphoblastic leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. He is currently in ICU with heart problems.

Please keep our pastor in prayer. He had surgery on 2/17 and had a cancerous mass removed from his lung. The surgery went well and they removed all cancer. Please pray for his recovery.

Please pray for a friend named Janella. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has had surgery and will begin chemotherapy shortly.

Please continue to keep Breezy's parents in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their beautiful Brianna. Barbara and Bruce are doing well. We all miss Brianna!!!!!

Continue to pray for Peter to stay in remission. He has finished chemo. He needs to learn how to crawl and walk. He is doing well. Peter recently had his 2 year birthday. Praise the Lord! God has done a mighty MIRACLE in his little body. (Remember he was not to live past Palm Sunday.) THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!! God is so Good!

Also, please continue to pray for Lizzy (she has had a bone marrow transplant due to her relapse), Andre, Bridget(she continues to be in remission--praise the Lord) We are waiting for test results, Deuce(he is in remission--praise the Lord), Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike (He is in remission--Praise the Lord!) and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.

Please continue to pray for Kathy. She has diabetes and is under going dialysis three times a week. Pray the Lord will heal her kidneys and restore health to her body.

As we continue to finish our treatments and go to our appointments we see new families starting the cancer journey. Please keep them in prayer for strength and healing.

And pray that our heavenly Father will give doctors the knowledge and wisdom to find a cure for cancer. He sent his word (Jesus) to heal all our diseases.

In Christ,

Vickie Dixon

Happy New Year! Thank you all for your continued support and prayers. We love and appreciate you all. I know I have been a little slow on updating; however, things are constantly busy since I went back teaching this year. Please sign her guestbook to encourage Leah. She loves hearing from you. Even if we don't get a chance to email everyone back, Leah reads them all and enjoys knowing you are checking in on her.

We had a wonderful Christmas. My mom and step dad came in from West Virginia and visited with us on Christmas day. We also went down to Ocean City and stayed at the Children's House By The Sea on Christmas break. This is a place where families in similar situations as us can go and stay at the beach. We only pay for food. It was really nice to get away. At first I was reluctant, but once I got there, I was happy I went. We went to see the Winterfest of Lights and did some clearance clothes shopping. We made out great with some much needed bargains. We also enjoyed just being away from everything. No phones, no work, no appointments, etc. What a nice break! Thank you Jesus!

As per Leah, she went and had her immunoglobulin blood protein transfusion and had very little side effects. She only experienced slight fever and back pain. The clinic had us post treat her with Tylenol for 24 hours and she made out fine. Praise the Lord! We went back on 12/23 and had her spinal tap, IV chemo, labs, and check up. Her counts were at 1600 and fell quite a bit from her last appointment; however, still in the normal range. Leah is growing taller and due to her metric square increasing (over all height and weight formula), they increased her steroids. Wasn't happy about this, but God knows all about it and is in control. The spinal tap went well and we will return on January 21st for breathing treatment, labs, IV chemo, check up, and recheck on her immunoglobulin counts. Leah had a two week delay in her monthly IV chemo due to the immunoglobulin being to low and her fighting pneumonia. We will now be finishing treatments in the beginning of September ( as long as no more delays.) Praise the Lord he is going to get us through this!!!!

Leah continues to see a metabolic doctor for her bones due to the steroids and side effects from the disease. Her next appointment for this is in February. She is seeing a physical therapist for her right leg twice a week to participate in aquatic therapy. One of the chemos is affecting her muscles in her right leg. She continues to be seen for her scoliosis (sorry for the spelling) by the ortho doctor. Her next appointment for this is also in February. We are holding ground on the curvature. PRAISE the LORD!

She will be having a neuropsychological evaluation done in February. Her spinal tap chemo affects the white matter in the brain. This testing will give us a baseline for Leah. She has been struggling with memory recall and some other issues. This will help us help her in her learning.

Leah's teacher has been great and she works with her. She has been able to keep A's and B's; however, she really works for these grades and her teacher knows there are some days when Leah is on and other days when she is not. (This is mostly in math.) We are praying and believing that when chemo is all done that her brain will restore itself.

Please continue to keep Breezy's parents in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their beautiful Brianna. The holidays are the hardest times for families mourning. Haley went home to heaven on August 11, 2004. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Continue to pray for Peter. He finished his last chemo treatment and is experiencing some side effects. Please pray that his counts will rebound and his cultures will be normal. That every cancer cell is dead in the name of Jesus!!!

This is Mom Mom Cohee with a brief update.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please keep Leah in your prayers. She is fighting pneumonia again. She had an appointment at AI Dupont Children's Hospital yesterday and her blood counts were high but her blood protein is low, this is why she is getting the viruses. She will have a blood protein transfusion on December 15th which will be a 7 hour process. The doctors plan to give her this type of transfusion for the remaining course of her chemotherapy - monthly. She wasn't able to receive her chemotherapy yesterday but is scheduled to go on the December 23rd. Leah's journey has been exciting to say the least. Keep them all your prayers the detours adds more stress to their lives. Yes we are on the down side of the treatments and she has had a few detours on her journey to healing.
\O/\O/\O/\O/\O/
God Bless you all and Have a Merry Christmas.
I am so sorry I haven't updated lately. As you know I am teaching at CTA and things have been EXTREMELY busy. I am keeping up with my job, Leah's homework, Andy's homework, and my take home homework (checking papers, lesson plans, etc.) And Dale is busy, busy, busy....
Andy is getting over a case of walking pneumonia. This was a little scary at first as his fever would come and go as Leah's did when she was first diagnosed with ALL. But God is faithful and Andy is back in the swing of things.
Leah is doing well over all. She has not experienced any serious issues since the summer. PRAISE THE LORD!
She has been having hair loss again. They have raised her chemo 4 times in the last sixty days due to her counts being too good and they want them more suppressed incase of any residual cancer cells. Leah needs to lose a little weight before her next appointment or they will raise her steroids. The steroids gave Leah night terrors and have kept her up for 23 hours in one day in the past. As well as they produce weight gain. We do not want this drug to be raised. Please pray that we can this weight off before her next appointment on December 10th.
She has been seeing a metabolic doctor for her bones due to the steroids and side effects from the disease. She will be seeing a physical therapist for her right leg and will be starting aquatic therapy in December . One of the chemos is affecting her muscles in her right leg. She continues to be seen for her scoliosis (sorry for the spelling) by the ortho doctor. We are holding ground on the curvature. PRAISE the LORD!
She will be having a neuropsychological evaluation in the next couple of months. Her spinal tap chemo affects the white matter in the brain. They are finally agreeing to this testing to give us a base line for Leah. She has been struggling with memory recall and some other issues. We requested this to be done over a year ago. They were not willing and our insurance would not help. Since there are new studies to show that this problem is affecting other children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia that are receiving the same or similar regimen of chemo as Leah; the insurance company is now agreeing to work with us.
Leah's teacher has been great and she works with her. She has been able to keep A's and B's; however, she really works for these grades and her teacher knows there are some days when Leah is on and other days when she is not. (This is mostly in math.) We are praying and believing that when chemo is all done that her brain will restore itself. We were recently told that our road maps for treatment shows we should be ending chemo at the end of August if we have no delays. We are anticipating finishing this race. Some days we are overwhelmed and would like to quit; however, we know that is not possible and God always gives us the strength to continue.
Thank you so much for keeping in touch with us. Thank you so much for continuing to pray for us. Also the Leukemia walk was a great success. We raised close to $1500.00. That was only through God and people like you that helped. THANK YOU!
Please continue to keep Breezy's parents in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their beautiful Brianna. The holidays are the hardest times for families mourning. Haley went home to heaven on August 11, 2004. Please keep her family in your prayers.
Continue to pray for Peter as he finishes his treatments. God has done a mighty MIRACLE in his little body. (Remember he was not to live past Palm Sunday.) THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!! God is so Good!
Also, please continue to pray for Lizzy (she has had a relapse), Andre, Bridget(she continues to be in remission--praise the Lord), Deuce(he is in remission--praise the Lord), Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for Kathy. She has diabetes and is under going dialysis three times a week. Pray the Lord will heal her kidneys and restore health to her body.
As we continue to finish our treatments and go to our appointments we see new families starting the cancer journey. Please keep them in prayer for strength and healing.
And pray that our heavenly Father will give doctors the knowledge and wisdom to find a cure for cancer. He sent his word (Jesus) to heal all our diseases.
This is Vickie's Mom - I thought I would do a brief update on the Dixon Family.
Leah has 9 months of therapy to go. \0/ \0/ \0/ Overall she is doing good. (But the Chemo is nasty) She is will be going for aquatic therapy for her leg. This will be less stress on the bones and help her gain strength in the muscle of the leg. This is due to the beginning diagnoses of ALL and treatment. Leah almost lost her leg. God is so good!
Andy had a case of walking pneumonia and is back in the swing of things; a little scary at first because his fever would come and go. Vickie and Dale are busy, busy, busy.
They had a great thanksgiving and God continues to be faithful to the Dixon family.
As they pray for you, pray for them.
Have a Blessed Holiday Season with family and friends and know that you are loved by the great creator our Lord.
**Update on Leah below:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Leah Dixon has made a commitment to build a Team for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk. We invite you to join us as a Team member by participating and raising funds. As many of you may know, Leah is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments for Leukemia and recently lost a good friend to Leukemia, Brianna -"Breezy". Due to this, we take this walk to heart and need your help. Other than fervent prayer, Leah and I, in our own power, cannot control who will get cancer nor can we control who will die from cancer; however, we can help raise funds for more research in hopes to find cures.
Your participation will help save lives: more than 640,000 adults and children are currently living with a blood-related cancer. Someone new is diagnosed every 5 minutes; someone dies every 9 minutes. Leukemia alone causes more deaths among children under 15 than any other disease in the country. Leukemia strikes 10 times as many adults as children.
The Light the Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s nationwide evening walk to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. It will be held Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Grenoble Avenue. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. and the walk begins at 7:00 p.m. Walkers carry illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate the many lives touched by cancer - red to show support, or white to show survivorship. The leisurely walk is about one to two miles on the boardwalk. There are pre- and post-walk festivities, refreshments and entertainment, which make for a truly memorable evening. Leah is a patient hero for the society and will be saying a few words at the event. Last year Leah had to do the walk in a stroller - this year Leah will walk on her own!!!!
Team members raise funds by encouraging friends, family and associates to contribute. (While you’re at it, why not get them to join the Team? The more the merrier!) All funds raised will support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma - and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
If you can’t be a Team member, then please sponsor Leah as she walks to raise funds. Your contribution will help fund medical research, support government advocacy and patient assistance programs, advance medical education, and provide critical information to the general public. Any checks should be made out to The Delaware Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and mailed to us at 3058 Deep Grass Lane, Houston, DE, 19954.
Our team is called Jeremiah 29:11 ("For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."). Our team has a goal to raise $1000.00. I hope you’ll join our team or sponsor Leah in this worthwhile and uplifting experience. Call me at (302) 424-4733 for any questions and to register.
Yours truly,
Vickie Dixon
****Addendum to the above letter:
To register to walk you will need to go to (Click) Light The Night. Then click on the left of the screen where is says to register. Make sure you register to walk in Delaware and at Rehoboth Beach. Fill in the contact information and make sure to designate that your team is "Jeremiah 29:11".
Once you have done this please send me an email stating you have registered and your name, address, phone number, and if you have anyone else that would like to walk with you. (If you have problems registering online or you prefer to have me register you online, please let me know.) I have log sheets to fill in your sponsors. I can mail them to you or you can just log them in on regular paper. Let me know which you prefer to do. You will need to collect monies before the walk so you can turn it in the evening of the walk. All checks need to be made out to The Delaware Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We will be walking on October 16th at Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Grenoble Avenue. Registration starts at 5:00 p.m. We will arrive around that time too. We look forward to meeting you.
If you think you would just rather sponsor Leah in her walk you can do that too. Whatever works best for you is just fine. Thank you very much for caring about this event.
**UPDATE ON LEAH:
Leah continues to do well over all. She has been suffering with a stomach bug on and off. She is also suffering with a cold or allergies. The doctors have recently raised her chemo again. Her liver seems to be doing okay right now. Leah has only missed two days of school. One day for the stomach bug and one day for her spinal tap. She has not been feeling her best, but she has been pushing herself. She had her monthly appointment on 9/17 and she had her spinal tap with chemo, IV chemo, breathing treatment, and lab work. Her white blood counts were a little high and her neutrophil counts were a high(white blood cells that fight infection). The doctors feel this is most likely her body trying to fight off the virus infections. They will redo her labs in two weeks. If her counts remain high, then they will increase her chemo again. Please pray that God will protect her from any additional colds, viruses, and other bugs throughout this school year because her immune system is suppressed due to the chemotherapy. If I have this figured correctly, Leah has 11 months of chemotherapy treatments left. This exciting for Leah because we can see an end to the tunnel. PRAISE THE LORD!!! We are still waiting to get the results from the metabolic doctor.
Leah is doing fine in school. She loves her teacher, Mrs. Thompson. She has nine other classmates in her class. They seem to get along well and are very caring toward each other. They have been very supportive toward Leah's progress. She is doing fine in all her subjects with the exception of struggling a little in Math. Her chemo and steroids don't help her in Math class either. Some days she can remember how to do Math and other days she can't. This is due to the steroids and Methotrexate chemo. The Methotrexate chemo can cause a plague residue in the brain; however, off of treatment for approximately five years the plague subsides. Please pray that the Lord will protect her brain and organs from any permanent damage from the chemo.
Andy is doing fine in school too. He has fourteen classmates. He continues to do soccer. This year the workouts have been WORKOUTS. The first day of practice he barely made it back to my room. Once he made it to my room, he collapsed on the floor and thought he was going to die. He was ready to quit and give up. We told him to hang in there and don't make any hasty decisions. Since then, middle of August, he has stuck with it and can do the practices without any problems. In fact he has been stung by bees and continues to finish the practices. He has lost eight pounds and likes the way his body is getting more stamina. He is very proud of himself and so are we.
Dale had a wonderful and successful time on his mission trip. They worked very hard and accomplished much. One of the men that went was not saved and got saved on the mission trip. PRAISE THE LORD! They also got to visit Niagara Falls before returning home.
I continue to enjoy teaching at Christian Tabernacle Academy. I have a wonderful class. It has been an adjustment adjusting to the new schedule; however, every week is getting a little easier. Dale is helping pick up the pieces where things fall through the cracks. Please continue to pray for us as we continue to adjust. We know God will empower us where he sends us.
If Breezy (Brianna) touched your life in someway or if you prayed for her then go to her website and sign her guestbook and let her parents know. This will encourage Barbara and Bruce. We will never know how many lives she has touched until we get to heaven.
Another update:
Leah came home from cancer camp on Saturday. She came home with a mild case of pneumonia. The doctor at the camp could hear crackling in her chest and put her on an antibiotic with red dye. Leah is allergic to red dye. When I picked her up at AI duPont Hospital, we headed to the ER per our oncologist and had her checked out. The chest x-ray did show a shadow on her lung. Her doctor ordered a non-dye antibiotic that she can tolerate. She has a terrible cough, but is doing well. She went to church yesterday morning. We had her stay home and rest in the evening. We start Vacation Bible School tonight. This will be all week in the evening. We have her orthopedic appointment tomorrow. They will recheck her curvature of the spine. Pray that the spine is straighter and has not gotten worse. She was at 21 degrees, if she goes to 25 degrees, they will put her in a brace. I know that God is in control. (smile) We have 12 1/2 months of maintenance chemo left.
Leah did take the news about Breezy going home to be with the Lord very well. She said it is sad but happy. When we got home from camp, she told Dale that "I hear that Breezy went home to paradise". She had stated that she had wanted Breezy to be able to go to camp and wear the bikini that she had for her. She also said that now Breezy is in heaven with her granddad. Andrew was totally shocked about the news. He too believed for a miracle here on earth. He is doing fine and knows Breezy received the best kind of healing.
I will miss Breezy! My heart was broken when I heard the news. I know she is at the banquet table with Jesus. She feels no more pain, but that doesn't mean I won't miss and grieve for her. I was looking forward to Leah and Breezy growing up together. Breezy was a strong, brave, intelligent child beyond her years. She had a relationship with Jesus Christ that we all should desire to have. She KNEW the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. She rarely complained, always singing praise songs to her savior. She had no fear or reservation of telling others about Jesus. She knew who she was in the Lord and who she represented (JESUS). The day she went to heaven she told Barbara and Bruce that "It is finished, it is finished". Later that day, Barbara put on Breezy's favorite praise and worship c/d. They were praising the Lord, when Barbara saw a smile on Breezy's face and that she had went on home to be with the Lord. She has a legacy that no one will ever be able to fill. May we all desire to be more like Breezy in our walk with Christ.
If Breezy (Brianna) has touched your life in someway or if you prayed for her then go to her website and sign her guestbook and let her parents know. This will encourage Barbara and Bruce. We will never know how many lives she has touched until we get to heaven. Her website is: http://www.caringbridge.com/de/briannamallory
Peter's tumor is dead and has been detaching itself from his organs. He will be have surgery to have the dead tumor removed from the sciatica nerve. Pray things will go well and no problems. This nerve affects his walking. He will go through radiation treatments too. Pray for his organs and growth plates to be protect and no adverse side effects. God has done a mighty MIRACLE in his little body. (Remember his was not to live past Palm Sunday.) THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!
Also please pray for a little girl named Haley. Haley has Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) cancer Stage III/Group III. She started chemotherapy on June 20, 2003 and Radiation for 6 weeks at St Jude. She had a relapse in April, 2004. She has a tumor growing again under her liver which cannot be remove. Haley is at home right now where her parents are trying to keep her as comfortable as possible. She needs a miracle from the Lord. We know prayer changes things. She is healed in the name of Jesus.
It is with sadness I write this to tell you Brianna (Breezy) Mallory has gone home to be with the Lord. We ask you to pray for Barbara, Bruce and their children during this time. Yes, we know Brianna has received her complete healing in heaven but here on this earth she will be greatly missed. I did not get to opportunity to meet her here but I look forward to meeting her in the future. Please pray for Leah as she does not know that Breezy has died, she is away at cancer camp. Leah loved her so much and as all of us she too believed for Breezy to receive her miracle here. Keep Vickie & Dale in your prayers also they loved Breezy too as did all the other friends she made in the hospital, plus the nurses & doctors. Breezy has left a spiritual legacy at 3 years old that no adult will be able to compete with. She was signing praises daily and telling everyone about Jesus and continually telling her mom, It will be alright I'm fine! Yes, she is fine, in the arms of Jesus
Even in our sadness we can rejoice. Peter the young boy that has sarcoma tumor on his sciatic nerve. The tumor is dead! Praise the Lord!
We don't know why one child has to leave and one child can stay but what I do know is that children are a gift from the Lord and He is always in control.
There is Power in Prayer,
Mom Mom Cohee
SORRY FOR THE DELAY IN AN UPDATE -- IT HAS BEEN CRAZY!!!!!!
Where do I start?
Leah’s liver function tests are back to normal. They are still doing testing on her DNA to see if she is missing any enzymes that help her metabolize her chemo. She restarted her oral chemos at 50nd had her spinal tap at the end of June. No cancer blasts in blood work and no suspicious cells in her spinal fluids. Praise the Lord! We had another hospital stay in July for possible shingles. At that time her chemo was stopped. It turned out not to be shingles and left the doctors puzzled. She since has restarted her oral chemos at 50nd some a little higher. She saw her eye doctor in July and no signs of cataracts from the steroids. Praise the Lord! We are scheduled to see the orthopedic doctor (recheck her spine), dentist (check up), the metabolic doctor (check her metabolism of her calcium due to her steroids thinning her bones), and her oncologist in August. I will let you know how her appointments go.
Leah is leaving for camp tomorrow. She will be gone a week. The camp is sponsored through the American Cancer Society. All the children have or had cancer that will be attending. They have nurses on staff. Please pray for me to not to worry and leave her in the Lord’s hands. This is the first time going to camp.
Good News about employment! We have been praying for God’s will about where we (the kids and me) will be in September. The Lord closed every door except a door at Christian Tabernacle. I will be teaching first grade at Christian Tabernacle Academy in Lincoln. The children will be attending there as well. We are excited! My class size will be 18 children or less. I like the fact of smaller class sizes for my children. This will be an adjustment, but we know we are in the Lord’s will and where He places us, He will empower us. Praise the Lord for this opportunity!!! We just need to make it financially through the month of August until I get my first paycheck. God is never too early or too late.
Reminder about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising walk. The Light the Night Walk is at Rehoboth Beach on October 16th in the evening. Cancer survivors walk with white illuminated balloons and cancer supporters walk with red illuminated balloons. What a special evening with the balloons lighting up the evening sky. We will be sending out emails and letters asking for your support in this walk. You can support by signing up under our group, walking and getting your own sponsors for your walk OR you can support by just sponsoring Leah’s walk. Whatever you would like to do would be helpful. WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE OTHER WALKERS SIGNED UP UNDER US AND WALK WITH US. This fundraiser supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for research, educational resources, and patient families in need of financial support. Leah is supposed to say a quick speech at this event. This is a fun family event. Our group is called “Jeremiah 29:11” . If you would like to walk or support Leah you can email us below or can call us at (302)424-4733.
****UPDATE ON BREEZY****URGENT
Breezy is still home with HOSPICE. She needs a MIRACLE! She has been stable over all considering her white blood count has been close to 400,000.
This count represents her leukemia cells are out of control. Her post transplant cancer -- lymphoma is currently active too. She regularly receives platelet and red blood cell transfusions. She has been in a lot of pain and the doctors have put her on a morphine pump and recently increased her morphine. She has not been eating or urinating the last couple of days. She continues to tell her mom she is going to be just fine! What faith this little girl has. Please continue to pray for her miracle. Our God can do anything!!!! God has spoken to many people that she is healed and will be fine. He will complete the work he has begun. He will do this to glorify Him. BREEZY IS HEALED IN JESUS’ NAME. Pray for peace and strength for Barbara and Bruce. We will update when we hear more.
Praise the Lord, Bridget continues to be in remission from Hodgkin's. I have not received an update on her scan results yet. Will give update when I hear more.
Little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live which expired Palm Sunday. When in the hospital, the Lord gave this family Psalm 40 as encouragement. They have kept these scriptures to heart. The tumor has continued to shrink. A.I.Dupont referred them to three hospitals to have the tumor surgically removed. Two of the hospitals said they would not do surgery because it would mutilate his little body. The last hospital ran more test and have found that the tumor is no longer attached to his lungs, bladder, prostate, etc. It is attached to the siatica? nerve. They will do surgery; however, it will effect that nerve and possible walking. We know it continues to be in God’s hands.
Maracella is 12 years old. From what I could understand from her mother (she has a strong Hispanic accent), Maracella has a hickman catheter and a feeding tube. She has something wrong with her gastrointestines. She is doing better. She got out of the hospital last week. Praise the Lord.
Please pray for Kathy. She has diabetes and is under going dialysis three times a week. Pray the Lord will heal her kidneys and restore health to her body.
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce(he is in remission--praise the Lord), Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT!!! GOD IS TRULY AN AMAZING GOD!!
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
*****An update to an earlier update*****
We just got back yesterday evening from a hospital stay at A.I. Dupont. Wednesday, June 16th we were sent to get labs done at Lab Corp because of Leah looking yellow (Jaundice). The results came back and her Bilirubin was too high. Last month her Bilirubin was 1.1 and was considered a little high. This lab report said her Bilirubin was 7.2. We were asked to come up to A.I. Dupont right away for a hospital stay. They wanted to run some tests to find out what was causing her liver to not function properly.
Leah had several lab testings done to see if she has a virus that could be causing this problem. As of today we are still waiting for results; however, she is not showing any symptoms that would make the doctors believe that she has a virus. She also had an ultrasound done to check for any stones, blocked ducts, any other problems. The results came back that everything looked healthy and fine. PRAISE THE LORD! On a earlier update I stated the doctors wanted to do a test to see if Leah is missing a certain enzyme that would help her body metabolize one of her chemos. The doctors did the enzyme test during our hospital stay and have sent it to California to be completed. This test is an DNA test that will show if she is missing that enzyme. The doctors speculate that she is because they have had a difficult time keeping Leah's counts stable during her long term maintenance chemotherapy part of treatment. Her immune system counts should not drop below 1000 and she has been up and down on her counts.
As of yesterday, they feel her liver problems have resulted because of her chemotherapy. Her liver is just overloaded. They have stopped her oral chemo and other medicines on Wed. June 16th and cancelled her spinal tap, IV chemo, and breathing treatment until her liver counts return to normal.
She is on plenty of fluids to help flush out her system. Her immune system counts have dropped to 480 and she needed to where a mask when going out. Her Bilirubin has come down to 3.1, which is still high but is much better. Her color is returning to normal. We are grateful that we caught this early and no permanent damage was done!!!!! The doctor said he could count on one hand all the kids that he has worked with that have develop jaundice due to chemotherapy. Leah is truly a sensitive kid and is such a testimony of how she rarely complains of all our detours during treatment.
At our stay we saw Brianna. She just got back from Sesame Street Place. She was receiving platelets. She did not need to have red blood cells this time. PRAISE THE LORD. She looks great and she had a wonderful time at Sesame Street Place.
We have labs on Monday and Thursday of this week and if things look good she will receive her spinal tap, IV chemo, and breathing treatment on Friday.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT!!! GOD IS TRULY A AMAZING GOD!!
Greetings in the Name of the Lord!!!! I'M SO SORRY I DID NOT UPDATE SOONER!!!!
****UPDATE ON BREEZY
Breezy has been sent home on HOSPICE. The doctors know of no treatment that can cure her. They say she will die from her cancer and could be here a couple of days to a month. WE BELIEVE THAT THE LORD HAS BRIANNA EXACTLY WHERE HE WANTS HER. WE BELIEVE THAT NOW GOD CAN DO A MIRACLE TO GLORIFY HIM AND NOT THE DOCTORS. Already she has been home for two weeks and she is doing fine. She is not taking any chemo and is continuing to receive steroids, blood pressure medication, some other medicines, platelets, and red blood cells when needed. She had labs done on Monday and her White Blood Count is over 200,000 and the doctors don't understand how she is doing so well when this is so HIGH. Her platelets were at 14,000; which surprised them because even though they were low, she normally is even lower. She did need some red blood cells, but they only gave her a half a bag. Her electrolytes were NORMAL!!!! Which is totally AMAZING because she had been extremely low and losing her potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc. WE KNOW GOD IS WORKING A MIRACLE FOR BRIANNA. We will update when we hear more.
****LEAH UPDATE
Overall Leah is doing good. We just got back from a week at The Children's House by the Sea in Ocean City, Md. It is a place where families like ours can go and get away from the routine of life and treatments. (We only had to pack our food and everything else was taken care of. Praise the Lord!!) We had a wonderful time! We went on rides, played putt putt golf, rode on a pirate ship adventure, saw a Shorebirds game, went to a water park, and played on the beach. During the first part of the beach week Andrew was at Sibling Cancer Camp. It is a camp for children that have siblings that have or had cancer. He went to Hershey Park, did archery, outdoor cooking, fishing/boating, and outdoor sports. He ate a lot of food that his body doesn't tolerate (because he said that is all they had {smile}) and returned with a rash. However, he had a WONDERFUL time.
Now we are back to reality and attempting to get back to a regular schedule. We are finishing up on home schooling and trying to catch up on chores, chores, chores.
Leah had her appointment at A.I. Dupont last month and everything went pretty well. Leah continues to be in remission. We only have to finish 418 days of chemo as of this Friday. We are over the half way mark! Praise the Lord. They will be running a test this Friday, 6/18/04, to see if she is missing an enzyme that doesn't allow her body to fully metabolize one of her chemo's. If she doesn't have that enzyme, then the dosage that she is on could be too high for her body and could result in toxicity causing slight to severe side effects. When we are there to get this test done, Leah will also be having a spinal tap, check up, labs, IV chemo, and a breathing treatment.
Last night we called the on-call oncologist because Leah looked a little yellow in her face and eyes. (Yes, I said YELLOW) They had us hold her daily oral chemo and sent us for labs today in Milford. We are waiting for results to see what is going on in her chemistries and liver function. Leah is feeling pretty good and only has had an upset stomach at times, but this is normal with taking chemo. Could this possibly be because she doesn't have that enzyme? So we are waiting and resting in the arms of our Lord Jesus, knowing He has everything under control. (SMILE)
Andrew and Leah are in a play at church. It is called "Down By the Creek Bank". Andrew has one of the lead speaking parts and Leah has a speaking part and a singing part. We are so excited to see them blooming in the Lord! Also Andrew led the neighbor's grandson to the Lord last week. (PRAISE THE LORD!!!) He continues on a regular basis to check on him and try to keep him fed spiritually. He just recently gave him a New Testament Bible and continues to invite him to church. We don't want these seeds to fall on shallow ground.
Please continue to pray that the Lord will guide, direct, and open doors where he wants me to work this coming school year. Leah has been release to go back to school. NOT MY WILL BUT HIS WILL BE DONE! I would like to teach again and work at my children's school; however, if the Lord wants me to home school again, then he needs to provide extra income for Dale or me so we can make it financially. God has used many people to bless our family and keep us going financially. WE THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS AND PRAY FOR A REAPING OF BLESSINGS FOR YOU!!!! Truly God knows what is best for my family and me and he knows the desires of my heart -- not my will but his will be done!! He has been here every step of the way and will continue to be with us. "For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."--Jeremiah 29:11
Praise the Lord, Bridget continues to be in remission from Hodgkin's and her labs have been great. Even her doctor was impressed on how well she is doing. She will have a recheck on scans in July.
Please continue to pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live which expired Palm Sunday. When in the hospital, the Lord gave this family Psalm 40 as encouragement. They have kept these scriptures to heart. In the beginning of April when Peter was examined by the doctor, the doctor could not feel his tumor. The doctor was astounded because in the past she always could feel the tumor. We are waiting for results from his scans. We are believing the scans will show what the doctor couldn't feel, that the tumor is GONE! I have not gotten an update about Peter, but will give one as soon as I hear more.
Maracella is 12 years old. From what I could understand from her mother (she has a strong Hispanic accent), Maracella has a hickman catheter and a feeding tube. She has something wrong with her gastrointestines. She is doing better. We saw her at Leah's last appointment and she was up walking around and looking much better. Pray that the Lord will continue to give the doctors wisdom to treat her and that God would allow his healing to manifest in her body. We will give an update when we hear more.
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
WE ARE BACK!!!!
What a wonderful time in Florida! As many of you know, we just returned from Florida on Leah's Make A Wish trip. We stayed at a place called Give Kids the World. (We will post pictures soon.)
On Monday, May 3rd, we were picked up at 6:00 a.m. by a white limo and driven to the Philadelphia airport. We flew to Orlando and was greeted by Give Kids the World volunteers at the airport. Our greeter/volunteer was Ruth. She was waiting for us just outside the terminal with a baggage cart and ready to escort us to pick up our baggage. After picking up the luggage, she then escorted us to Avis for a rental car. We were given a brand new Dodge Caravan to drive for the week. It was so nice it brought tears to my eyes. We then drove to Give Kids the World Village. It is a 51 acre magical village for children with life threatening illnesses. Everything is free at the village. We ate lunch at the ice cream palace and had dessert too! They have unlimited ice cream from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The kids loved that! We then finished checking in and settled in our villa. We ate dinner at the Gingerbread house which has small tables and chairs made just for kids and over 70,000 peppermint candies made in the tables. We played at the Amberville train station where you can play arcade games, radio controlled boats, toy trains, and a real train you can ride. After playing and orientation we turned in for the night.
On Tuesday, May 4th, we went to Sea World. We petted and fed stingrays. We saw Shamu and the show. We went to the Pet's Ahoy show which had dogs, cats, pigs, rats, skunks, doves, chickens, and ducks in the show. They were all trained to do something in the show....open a door, open a window, open a secret passage door, close doors, pull down shades, jump rope, climb ropes and etc. It was amazing how it was put together. All these animals on stage, without people, working in sync to open or close doors, hatches, levers, etc. From there we went to feed the dolphins in hopes to have Leah pet one. This was one of her wishes to pet a dolphin. We all got to feed and pet the dolphins several times and Sea World even got a picture of Leah doing her wish!!! We ate lunch, had our picture taken with "Dolly the Dolphin" (a cartoon dolphin) and headed back to the village. We had ice cream and took Andy and Leah swimming at the village. After dinner, of course, we had more ice cream. We took Leah and Andy back to swimming and then headed back to the villa to watch a movie and order pizza. (You can order pizza in the evening and have it delivered to your villa for free! The kids loved that!!)
On Wednesday, May 5th, we went to Disney World -- The Magic Kingdom. What a truly magical place. Give Kids the World (GKTW) set up a meeting for Leah to meet Cinderella get her autograph, and have her picture taken with her. From there Leah and the family was escorted from place to place to get autographs and have pictures taken with Cinderella's mice, Chip and Dale, Winne the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Max. We rode Goofy's roller coaster, Indy Cars, saw Belle the princess, more autographs and pictures with Donald Duck, Launch Pad McDuck, Buzz Lightyear, Lilo and Stitch. We rode Space Mountain, tea cups, Buzz Lightyear, the monorail, runaway train roller coaster, Splash Mountain, and a regular train. Leah's wish was to meet Cinderella and to get a princess dress. Again her wish came true. Wednesday evening was Parent's Night Out. The kids had a personal volunteer to play with. They loved it and didn't want to leave when we came to pick them up.
On Thursday, May 6th, we got up early to have a professional picture taken with Mickey and Pluto at the village. We went to Disney World -- The Animal Kingdom. By now we all are getting just a little tired!!! We went on the Kilimanjaro Safari. We saw all kinds of animals and were even chased by pretend poachers. We walked the animal trail and saw gorillas and hippos underwater. We rode a train to a special petting zoo where a goat ate the tag off of Leah's wheelchair. They love paper!! From there we went to see a 3D movie "It's Tough to Be a Bug" (characters from Bug's Life) The chairs moved, bugs squirted us, and with it being 3D, they were right up in our face. WOW! We then went on the Roaring River Rapids and got soaking wet!! We got to ride that twice. What fun!! We returned to the village to eat dinner, have ice cream, and meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The children received presents, played at the magical castle, and rode the carrousel. We went back to the villa and watched movies and ordered pizza.
On Friday, May 7th, we went to Universal Studios. We got autographs and pictures taken with Shrek, Princess Fiona, Sponge Bob, Lucy & Ricky, Winnie the Woodpecker, Raggedy Ann, Alice in Wonderland, Donnie and Eliza Wild Thornberries. We saw a 3D movie of Shrek and the chairs moved and moved and moved, donkey's sneezing on us, terrible smells, etc. It was fun. We rode the Jaws ride and it was fun not scary. Leah got her face painted with an angel and Andy got a shark tattoo. We rode the Men In Black ride and shot our lasers at the aliens. Boy, that was fun! We rode it twice and got a free picture of our journey from Universal Studios. We rode the Back to the Future ride. It was rough, but a neat ride. We ate lunch and picked up another complimentary picture of the family. We had fun and were tuckered out. We went back to the villa and took a nap. We went to dinner, had ice cream, played putt putt golf and returned to the villa for rest. Of course we watched movies and ordered pizza. Mayor Clayton, a rabbit, came by to tuck in the kids for bed. He was very silly. He bounced on the beds, hit Andy with the pillows, stole Andy's bed, covered Leah with all the covers so you couldn't even see her, and then he got serious and tucked them in. He turned out the lights, shut the door, gave mom and dad a hug, and checked the refrigerator and freezer for carrots. Sorry Mayor Clayton, we only had water in the fridge.
On Saturday, May 8th, we were supposed to go to Epcot, but Andy woke up early in the morning with a intestinal virus. We hung around the pool. Yes, we got sunburned, but we had a good time. We rested in the evening at our villa and of course ordered pizza.
On Sunday, May 9th, was Mother's day and check out day. We had to be out of our villa by 11:00 a.m. Andy was still feeling very bad. We packed up, checked out, and hung around the village. We played arcade games, rested, had lunch, played at the castle, rested and headed for the airport. Andy laid down in the airport seats until we left Orlando. We arrived in Philadelphia earlier than expected; however, there were storms and we could not get off the plane or get our luggage until the storm and lightening stopped for at least 15 minutes. We rode home in a limo again and got home early Monday morning, May 10th. We were tired or as Leah says "tared".
What a wonderful time we had. We met some nice families. The parks treated us like royalty with our Give Kids the World button and special guest cards. Leah was given a wheelchair to use at the parks and her ankle is feeling much better. Leah's wishes came true! The Lord has been so good to our family! We still are pinching ourselves to see if it was a dream or reality.
On a more serious note, we go back to A.I. Dupont on Friday, May 14th, this Friday. Leah is feeling great! Leah will be having labs, breathing treatment, bone density testing, check up, and IV chemo. We will let you know how her appointment goes.
Now an update on Breezy. Breezy was admitted with an infection in her central line. She is on IV antibiotics. She had her Lymphocyte transplant on May 5th. The transplant went well. Please continue pray for her to develop a rash. This is a sign that the body is accepting the transplant. She did not get a rash with the bone marrow transplant. She is home now and we are waiting for the transplant to do its job. We are waiting for the doctor's report to match up with the Lord's report. We will update when we hear more.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. We are praising the Lord because Bridget has been able to return to school. She is behind, however, she is working hard and is such a strong girl. She is going to have her scans done again very soon. Please pray that all her test come out with negative results. If they come out negative this time (which they will in the name of Jesus) then they will FINALLY state she is in REMISSION. Pray that the Lord will continue to give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength. We will update when we hear any news.
Please continue to pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live which expired Palm Sunday. When in the hospital, the Lord gave this family Psalm 40 as encouragement. They have kept these scriptures to heart. In the beginning of April when Peter was examined by the doctor, the doctor could not feel his tumor. The doctor was astounded because in the past she always could feel the tumor. We are waiting for results from his scans. We are believing the scans will show what the doctor couldn't feel, that the tumor is GONE!
At our last hospital stay we shared a room with a little girl named Maracella. I think she is 12 or 13 years old. From what I could understand from her mother (she has a strong Hispanic accent), Maracella has a hickman catheter and a feeding tube. She has something wrong with her gastrointestines. Anyway, the Lord knows exactly what is wrong. Please pray for her! The whole time that we were there she moaned in pain and morphine wouldn't even help the pain. She was either vomiting or moaning in pain! Pray that the Lord will give the doctors wisdom to treat her and that God would allow his healing to manifest in her body. We will give an update when we hear more.
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Thanks for checking in on us and we appreciate all your prayers and support! Please sign Leah's web page. It keeps us all encouraged.
Greetings in the Name of the Lord!
We want to continue to thank everyone for their love and kindness they have shown our family. We thank you so much for the way you have faithfully prayed for us, sent words of encouragement, sent financial support, and other acts of kindness. We have only made it by Christ using you to work in our lives. We pray blessings on you and your families for every prayer and sacrifice you have made for our family. We honestly can't express our gratitude in words.
Now for an update:
We have had an eventful last ten days with Leah. As you know Leah saw the Orthopedic doctor on Tuesday, April 20th. The very next day, Leah stepped out of the van and landed on her right foot. When doing this she had excruciating pain. She cried! Her foot continued to be painful and she started favoring the other leg when walking. On Friday, April 23rd, the oncologist had us go up to A.I. Dupont to check out the foot. The orthopedic doctor and oncologist made a decision to have Leah stay the night to run tests. We were completely caught off guard, had no fresh clothes and such!!
They did several blood test, xrays, and bone scans. They wanted to make sure Leah did not have another bone infection, since this was the leg she previously had the staph and bone infection in. After much testing, it was found that she did not have a bone infection (praise the Lord), or a regular fracture. They did see healing stress fractures, but no current stress fractures. This could be that she still has a stress fracture and it will show up after it is healing or she just has a sprain. They put her in a half cast secured with an ace bandage and had her use her walker to take pressure off the foot.
We were release after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
That evening at 9:45 p.m. we were called by the orthopedic doctor. He stated that something peculiar showed up in one of her blood test. He said he felt that it is from lab contamination, but he would have to keep watching the culture. He said he would call us back on Sunday to determine if we needed to go back to A.I. Dupont for more testing. Sunday came and he continued to feel that it was a lab contamination.
On Monday the oncology clinic called and said they wanted to make sure it was definitely a lab contamination. We were requested to go up and redo the test. We went up on Tuesday, April 27th, and redid the test. As of today we have nothing growing on the culture -- which is GREAT! One more day and we will be in the clear!
As per her foot, she is no longer wearing the half cast and is only using the walker intermittently when she feels she needs too. By Monday she will definitely be without the walker.
We leave for Leah's Make a Wish on Monday, May 3rd. We will be flying to Florida and stay at a place called Give The Kids The World. It is a place just for families like us in similar situations. We will visit Disney World and Sea World. We all are very excited! We will let everyone know how this goes. (SMILE) We will be back on May 9th.
As of today Leah has completed 433 days of treatment and has 462 days left of long term maintenance chemotherapy. We are almost to the half way mark. Praise the Lord! We go back to A.I. Dupont to see her oncologist on May 14th. We will have a breathing treatment, labs, IV chemo, doctor checkup, and a bone density test. We will let you know more after our appointment.
At our hospital stay we shared a room with a little girl named Maracella. I think she is 12 or 13 years old. From what I could understand from her mother (she has a strong Hispanic accent), Maracella just had a hickman catheter and a feeding tube put in. She has something wrong with her gastrointestines. Anyway, the Lord knows exactly what is wrong. Please pray for her! The whole time that we were there she moaned in pain and morphine wouldn't even help the pain. She was either vomiting or moaning in pain! We prayed with her and stopped in to check on her when we went back up on Tuesday. Pray that the Lord will give the doctors wisdom to treat her and that God would allow his healing to manifest in her body.
Now an update on Breezy. She is home right now and just finished a round of chemo to bring her white blood count down. They are planning to do a Lymphocyte transplant on May 5th. Which is totally amazing that she qualifies for this since one year ago she didn't. It is because the Lord increased the donor cells in Breezy's body. PRAISE THE LORD! This transplant could have life threatening side effects; however, it could give Breezy the cure she needs for the leukemia and lymphoma. I know that this is a weird request, but when you are praying for Breezy about this Lymphocyte transplant, pray that she will develop a rash after the transplant. This is a sign that the body is accepting the transplant. She did not get a rash with the bone marrow transplant. We will update when we hear more.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. We are praising the Lord because Bridget has been able to return to school. She is behind, however, she is working hard and is such a strong girl. She is going to have her scans done again very soon. Please pray that all her test come out with negative results. If they come out negative this time (which they will in the name of Jesus) then they will FINALLY state she is in REMISSION. Pray that the Lord will continue to give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength. We will update when we hear any news.
Please continue to pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live which expired Palm Sunday. When in the hospital, the Lord gave this family Psalm 40 as encouragement. They have kept these scriptures to heart. In the beginning of April when Peter was examined by the doctor, the doctor could not feel his tumor. The doctor was astounded because in the past she always could feel the tumor. They are currently at Disney World with Peter and will return this coming week for scans to be done. We are believing the scans will show what the doctor couldn't feel, that the tumor is GONE!
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce, Justin, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
In Christ,
Another quick update:
Leah had her appointment yesterday with the orthopedic doctor. We feel this was a good appointment. She was diagnosed with Scoleosis (curvature of the spine); however, it is only at 21 degrees. At this point she will only need to be watched. If the degrees go to 25 or over, they will put her in a brace. I know my Lord is in control, I believe in the name of Jesus she is healed, and his healing will continued to be manifested.
Her knees are uneven; however, praise the Lord, her legs are only 2 mm different in length (which isn't much at all). So another words, one knee may be higher, but her legs are basically the same length.
She showed in her right leg that she has a stress fracture; however, Dr. Mason was not concerned about this as long as it is not causing her pain and problems. We continue to think that the intermittent limping is caused by toxicity from her Vincristine chemo since the limping is not everyday and seems to pick up every three weeks.
Her legs show some thinning in the bones; however, Dr. Mason did not seem alarmed about it. He suggested that Leah do daily exercising with some resistant weights. He said this is the best way to get calcium in the bones, without taking medicine. (Leah is limited on medicines she can take and she is not allow to take any vitamins to boost her immune system because it can boost any residual cancer cell too.) We will start the exercising and continue taking tums until we talk with our oncologist. He suggested that we talk to our oncologist about seeing a metrobolic doctor concerning the thinning of bones. He does feel the thinning is caused by the chemo and steroids.
We go back to A.I. Dupont to see her oncologist on May 14th. We will have more information then. We will be rechecked by the orthopedic doctor in August.
Now update on Breezy. She is in the hospital getting some chemo to bring down her white blood counts. She hasn't gotten the results from her second bone marrow biopsy yet. They are planning to do a Lymphocyte transplant in the next couple of weeks. Which is totally amazing that she qualifies for this since one year ago she didn't. It is because the Lord increased the donor cells in Breezy's body. PRAISE THE LORD! I will update when I hear more.
Thanks for checking in on us and we appreciate all your prayers and support! Please sign Leah's web page. It keeps us all encouraged.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
A quick update:
Leah went to her appointment today at A.I. DuPont. Her counts were good. She had labs, breathing treatment, check up and IV Chemo. She is starting her new round of steroids. We talked to the Physician Assistant about Leah's hair loss, limping with some pain, and one knee being higher than the other. Her hair loss is from one of her chemo's. Leah seems to be one of those kids that are more sensitive to chemo than most. They did an thorough exam and found Leah has scoliosis (curvature of the spine). They did numerous xrays today and we have an appointment this Tuesday, April 20th with an orthopedic doctor. They are trying to figure out what is causing the uneven knees, limping with some pain, and how severe her scoliosis is. They are also trying to figure out if any of this could be resulting from chemotherapy, steroids, or the disease (leukemia).
I would ask that you please pray for a complete, I said complete, healing in her body. I really hate to see Leah have to go through additional treatment of sorts with her current chemotherapy treatments. How much can one person take? I know my God is able to touch Leah and heal her before we see the doctor on Tuesday. Believe with me for a miracle for Leah!
Thank you for your prayers! We will update after our appointment on Tuesday.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Update on April 11,2004
Greetings in the Name of the Lord!
Happy Easter! It is Resurrection Sunday and we are praising the Lord for His mercy and grace. He is no longer in the tomb for he is alive! I just love celebrating Easter! Did you get to see the Passion? Wow, what a life changing movie! Go see it if you haven't seen yet!
Dale and I have been home sick all week with a respiratory virus. We were in and out of bed with fever, cough, wheezing, congestion, weakness, aches and pains, etc. Dale had to go to the doctor and ended up with bronchitis. I have been able to nurse along with vitamin c and garlic. Leah and Andrew haven't gotten it yet and we are praying they won't. They have been our nurses this week. We went to church today to celebrate Christ's resurrection. We were exhausted when we got home. We still feel a little weak from the virus. Dale and I still have some wheezing and cough, but no fever. We are doing way better than we had been doing this week. Praise the Lord!
We go back to A.I. Dupont on Friday, April 16th, which will be day 420 of treatment and 476 days left for treatments. We will be having labs, breathing treatment, check up, and IV chemo. Overall Leah is doing good. Her counts seem to be more stable again. She is starting to lose her hair again. She hasn't lost all of it, but she has been shedding quite a bit. It has been in her bed and all over the furniture. She is experiencing some toxicity from one of her chemo's that affects her right ankle muscles and causes her to limp. We will be having the doctors check her legs at her appointment. We have noticed one knee is higher than the other. We will update again after her appointment.
Leah has played in two soccer games so far. She continues to enjoy this extra activity. It takes great effort on her part to play, but she gives it her all! We are so proud of her. Andy is playing soccer too. He is on U14 team. Many of the kids are older, but Andy is giving his all. He is trying and pushing to do his best! We are so proud of him too.
Dale and I continue to be involved with hospital visitation and children's church at our church. Andy and Leah are going to be in a play at our church in June. In May, Andy will be playing his guitar and Leah will be doing her skit for a church in Dover. We are so proud of them. Leah has made a new friend at church named Carly. She is such a sweet girl. She has a sister named Rachel and Leah likes her too. We are praying the Lord will send Andrew a good Christian friend that is at his spiritual level or higher. He longs to have a best friend.
Dale's car is still not working. It will be going to the dealership this week. We have had a local shop working on it along with Dale and they just can't figure it out. Please pray about that. Also pray that the Lord will open the doors and show me what I am supposed to be doing for next year. I do so long to be in God's will. I want whatever the Lord has for me, whether it is to continue to homeschool, go back to teaching outside of the home, or something else the Lord has for me. I am not praying any one thing in specific for I know what the Lord wants for us is best.
We want to continue to thank everyone for their love and kindness they have shown our family. We thank you so much for the way you have faithfully prayed for us, sent words of encouragement, sent financial support, and other acts of kindness. We have only made it by Christ using you to work in our lives. We pray blessings on you and your families for every prayer and sacrifice you have made for our family. We honestly can't express our gratitude in words.
An update on Brianna: Barbara said the doctor met with her with a new plan of treatment for the Leukemia and the doctor said that they were treading in miraculous territory right now. As many of you know, she had a bone marrow transplant and relapsed one month later. At that time they did a bone marrow biopsy and it confirmed that she had relapsed and had very little donor cells left. She recently had another bone marrow biopsy done. When the doctor came to Barbara to give her the results, the doctor said "They were perplexed by the results." Breezy's biopsy showed that she has 99.5 percent donor cells. The doctors can't explain this. They are doing another biopsy this Tuesday to confirm the results. I told Barbara I am going to believe for 100 percent this time. The doctors are consulting on what the next step is. We know God is working a miracle in Breezy's life. Praise the Lord!!! Remember the devil is a liar and Breezy is healed!!!!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. We are praising the Lord because Bridget has been able to return to school. She is behind, however, she is working hard and is such a strong girl. We are waiting for some test results on whether she is in remission. Pray that the Lord will continue to give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength. We will update when we hear any news.
Please continue to pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live which has expired. They were given encouraging news that his tumor shrunk 1 cm. in size. PRAISE the LORD! Pray that the Lord will completely heal him of this cancer.
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce, Justin, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna, Ike and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Pray for Tony and Ivory, who have colon cancer.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
I've added an update to our current update (smile).
Leah had her appointment on Friday, March 19th. For the most part things went well. She had her spinal tap done; however, even with sedation, she was more aware of the procedure. She was very emotional during the procedure and she just couldn't get relaxed during the tap, which makes her muscles in her back tight. The doctor had to try several times to complete the spinal tap. The tap was completed and they are considering changing some her sedation medicine for better results. Leah can remember some of the problems during the tap and some of it she doesn't remember. Her blood labs show that her ANC has dropped to 748 and should be above 1000. Her red blood cells and platelets remain at a good level. There were no cancer blasts in her spinal fluid or blood. PRAISE the LORD! We will be having labs done on this Thursday to recheck her ANC.
Leah is on her monthly steroid pulse and is feeling the side effects from them and her IV chemo. She has been experiencing bone pain, upset stomach, emotional roller coaster, hunger, some back pain from the spinal tap, one minute she is tired and the next she can't sleep and more side effects that we won't list. We pretty much know the drill and just cope as necessary. All in all Leah keeps a positive attitude! Yesterday getting ready for church she didn't feel well and was laying down in between getting ready for church. One minute she is saying she doesn't feel well and the next minute she is jumping up off the couch praising the Lord and getting ready for church! She is so strong!
An update on Brianna: The doctors are no longer treating the Lymphoma at this time. They have had to focus on treating the Leukemia. As I said before her white blood count went above 120,000. When we saw Brianna at her pizza party in the hospital a couple of weeks ago, she was very tired, still praising the Lord, but run down. Barbara said the doctor met with her with a new plan of treatment for the Leukemia and the doctor said that they were treading in miraculous territory right now. Since that time, Breezy has been eating, riding the bike in the ward, marching for the Lord in the ward, and continually praising the Lord with a passion!!! Her white blood count has dropped to 54,000 and they have been seeing it drop twice a day when they do the labs. This is awesome!!!! We know God is on the brink of performing a MIRACLE!!!! Remember the devil is a liar and Breezy is healed!!!!
Update on Peter: We ran into his mother at the clinic during our visit. They were being sent down to have their scan done. When they came back up from the scan, they had fabulous news. Dawn, his mother, told Dale that the tumor has shrunk in diameter a total of 1 centimeter. Now lets remember he was only given one month to live and that has expired. The Lord is so good!!! Thank you Jesus!! Lets continue to pray the Lord will finish the work he has begun in Peter.
I am asking everyone to pray for Dale's car. It is broke down right now. We hope by the grace of God that it will be fixed in the next couple of weeks. Our van is still running. We recently had it serviced and the transmission fluid was BLACK. That's not good. It was not over due for changing. We are a little concerned about that. Pray the Lord will continue to keep her running without any problems. This is the good vehicle we use to go to Wilmington for appointments. Also please pray for the Lord's wisdom and knowledge concerning some decisions we need to make for our family.
We appreciate all of you and we appreciate your prayers, financial support, words of encouragement, and acts of kindness. We couldn't make it without you!!!!!!!!!!!!! May the Lord bless you all for the sacrifices you have made for our family!!!!!!!!
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Update on Monday, March 15, 2004
Have you seen The Passion yet? If you haven't seen this movie -- Go see it!!! WOW!!
Please sign Leah’s Guestbook. Even if you only type two words, just to know you were checking on her encourages her. Thank You!! I am still working on getting some updated pictures for her website.
Over all we are doing great! Leah's counts are more stable right now. Her hair is growing back more and more. Most of the time she is feeling pretty good (smile), just a few minor rocky spells through the month. She had two colds and one sinus infection in the last 30 days, but still hanging in there. She continues to have side effects from her medicines; however, I think for the most part we are starting to build a tolerance to them. We learn to live with the bone pain, stomach aches, headaches, etc. We continue to thank the Lord and praise him for his goodness and mercy.
We go back to A.I. Dupont on Friday March 19th, which will be day 392 of treatment and 504 days left for treatments. We will be having labs, breathing treatment, check up, IV chemo, and a spinal tap. We plan to visit Brianna.
We have some fabulous news about Leah. The Make A Wish Foundation contacted Leah and is going to grant her a wish. She wants to go to Florida to pet a dolphin and see Disney World. We will find out in the next week or so when we are supposed to go. Also, the Believe in Tomorrow Foundation has contacted us and said Leah could come back to their beach house in Ocean City this June for a week. Last summer she was sick and didn't get to stay but one night.
We have some more great news. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society called yesterday and has asked Leah to be their Patient Hero for the Light the Night Cancer Walk in Sussex County again. As you know, we walked last year and said a few words, but Leah was still in pretty intense chemo and wasn't feeling her best. We weren't able to rally and get supporters because we didn't know if we would even be there. This year we plan to encourage others to walk with us and help with fundraising for them. We are going to really use this as a time to celebrate life, walk for ones still fighting cancer, and walk in memory for the ones we have lost to the fight. Leah will have the opportunity to speak at the event and give her testimony. We have named our walking team Jeremiah 29:11. We have been feeling like someone should pinch us to make sure this is for real. God has been so good to our family! It is truly amazing how we have been able to survive through this ordeal financially and emotionally. Yet, God has been so good to us, not only has he provided for our needs, he has even given us these special blessings. Truly it is more than we could ask for; however, it is so nice to see Leah have some sunshine blessings in the mist of the treatment storms.
We recently found out, a young Amish boy we had been praying for died. He had a relapse and the cancer won. We just saw him 3 1/2 weeks ago at the clinic when we had an appointment. He looked thin but was in great spirits and couldn't tell anything was wrong. My heart is so heavy for his mother. She also has a baby that was recently diagnosed with cancer. How much can a mother take? Please keep her and the baby in prayer. Sorry I don't know her name, but Olen was the boy that past away.
Brianna (Breezy) continues to fight for her life. She is now battling Leukemia and Lymphoma. The Lymphoma is a result of the radiation given to her in the initial therapy for her rare form of Leukemia. Breezy continues to be in pain and run high fevers. When the doctors put her on steroids it helps with the fever and pain; however, it increases her white blood count, which affects her Leukemia. It seems like every week the doctors give Barbara more bad news. This family has been through so much! I am asking all prayer warriors to continue to pray and fast a meal for her at least once a week or more. We know God is in control; however, until her healing is manifested, we need to lift them up. Lets continue to pray for the healing manifestation to take place in her body and for strength and encouragement to her parents.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is recovering from shingles. The scan we have been praying about came back negative. They will redo tests again in 3 or 4 weeks. Pray again for negative results on her scans. Pray that the Lord will continue to give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength. We will update when we hear any news.
Pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). He was given one month to live. They recently got some encouraging news that his tumors were softening and reducing in size. PRAISE the LORD! Pray that the Lord will completely heal him of this cancer.
Also, please continue to pray for Andre, Deuce, Justin, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for a teacher named Charlotte who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Please continue to pray for a friend of mine named Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. She has already been through so much. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
Please remember to sign Leah’s Guestbook. This encourages her greatly. Thank You!! Also we will try to get some updated pictures on the site. (Her hair is growing back! SMILE)
Leah had her A.I. Dupont appointment on Friday, February 20th. She had her breathing treatment, labs, doctor appointment, and her IV chemo. Her counts were at 1700 and she is on full doses of chemo. Which means her counts are doing well. We are currently just ending a 5 day pulse of steroids, which causes insomnia, emotional roller coaster, hunger, upset stomach, nightmares, hyperactivity, trouble concentrating, moon face, headaches, etc. We are so glad she took her last dose this morning and she won’t have to take it again for 23 days. She has some bone pain from her IV chemo and some sinus problems. The physician assistant stated that kids on long-term chemo tend to develop sinus problems and she prescribed a nasal steroid to help. Through all these minor side effects, Leah remains strong and an encouragement. She rarely complains and continues to pray for others. She continues to have zero cancer blasts in her lab work. PRAISE THE LORD!!! We have about 450 days left of chemo treatment.
We go back to A.I. Dupont on March 19th for a breathing treatment, labs, doctor appointment, IV chemo, and a spinal tap.
The Lord CONTINUES to be FAITHFUL in meeting every need spiritually, physically, emotionally, and financially. When we have been down, he has sent someone to encourage us. When we have needed to cry, he has given us a shoulder to cry on. When we have needed to talk, he has sent someone to talk to. When we have needed food or finances, he has sent someone to meet our need. We continue to be AMAZED how we have been able to survive with only Dale’s income. God has used YOU to bless us and we are GRATEFUL for your prayers, encouragement, and financial blessings. We pray for blessings to be returned to you for your giving. Thank you!!
Breezy has developed a second cancer in her body called lymphoma. This is a result of the radiation given to her in the initial therapy for her rare form of Leukemia. Breezy has been responding very well to the new drug in clinical trials for the Leukemia from John Hopkins hospital in conjunction with AI Dupont in Wilmington, DE. She will have to temporarily stop this drug so they can start a new treatment plan for the lymphoma. Breezy is having a lot of pain with fevers, but this little girl of 3 years old has Jesus. When her pain subsides, she bounces back up and starts praising the Lord - singing to the Lord, dancing to Lord. What strength and inspiration she is to us all. Lets continue to pray for the healing manifestation to take place in her body and for strength and encouragement to her parents.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. There is a concern about one of the test results. She will be having a redo on a scan done earlier. Please pray the scan comes out 100 percent negative. If the scan comes out 100 percent negative, then she will be officially in remission. Please believe with me by faith that her scan is 100 percent negative and she is in remission. Pray that the Lord will give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength and peace during this anxious time. We will update when we hear any news.
Also, please continue to pray for Olen, Andre, Deuce, Justin, Justice, Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia or another form of cancer. Pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). Pray that the Lord will completely heal him of this cancer. Pray for a teacher, named Charlotte, that has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. She has already been through so much. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
Thursday, February 12, 2004 10:10 AM CST
Please remember to sigh Leah’s Guestbook. This encourages her greatly. Thank You!!
Leah continues to take oral chemo everyday with 5 day pulses of steroids every 28 days. She gets IV chemo (Vincristine) every 28 days and a spinal tap with Mex. chemo every 84 days. Her counts have been great! In fact they were too great and her chemo was increased. Yes, you read that correctly. Her counts were running over 2100. She actually began feeling more like herself. The oncologists want to suppress her bone marrow counts to hover around 1000 to keep any residual cancer cells from multiplying. Since this increase, she has had more side effects and in just two weeks her counts have dropped a 1000 points. We will be taking her to get labs done very soon to make sure she doesn’t go neutropenic (low white blood count-high risk for infection) again.
We will be returning to A.I. Dupont on Friday, February 20th, for a breathing treatment, labs, checkup, and IV Chemo (Vincristine).
The Lord CONTINUES to be FAITHFUL in meeting every need spiritually, physically, emotionally, and financially. When we have been down, he has sent someone to encourage us. When we have needed to cry, he has given us a shoulder to cry on. When we have needed to talk, he has sent someone to talk to. When we have needed food or finances, he has sent someone to meet our need. We continue to be AMAZED how we have been able to survive with only Dale’s income. God has used YOU to bless us and we are GRATEFUL for your prayers, encouragement, and financial blessings. We pray for blessings to be returned to you for your giving. Thank you!!
Breezy is currently at A.I. Dupont. They believe they have found what is causing her fevers and bloody stools. They feel she has ulcerative colitis in addition to her rare form of leukemia. They are currently trying to find medicines that she can tolerate and take with her current medication she is on for the clinical study through John Hopkins. Pray that God will continue to give them and the doctors wisdom for what is the right treatment for her. The medication she is taking for the clinical study seems to be lowering her white blood count (in a positive way) and reducing the cancer blasts. Pray for God to continue to give them strength and a manifest of her complete healing. Breezy continues to be a strong and vibrant little girl living for Jesus!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She had several tests last week. There is a concern about one of the test results. She will be having a MRI and a PET scan to give them more information on a spot that showed up on a scan from last week. Pray that the Lord will give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength and peace during this anxious time. Pray that these test results will show nothing to be concerned about. Pray and agree for her complete healing.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia. Pray for little Peter, he is one years old and has sarcoma(unsure of spelling). Pray that the Lord will completely heal him of this cancer.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Pray the Lord will give a complete healing for her cancer. She has already been through so much. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
Sorry we haven’t updated sooner.
Also things have been a little slow with people signing Leah's Guestbook. Could you please sign it for Leah -- this greatly encourages her. Thank You!!
We are doing overall fine. We had a stomach bug last week. Leah had it worst, Andy did the best with it, and Dale and I fell in between on how we felt. Leah has been taking oral chemo everyday with 5 day pulses of steroids every 28 days. She gets IV chemo (Vincristine) every 28 days and a spinal tap with Mex. chemo every 84 days. We have about 500 days left of maintenance chemo. We originally thought it was less time, but confirmed it with our treatment road maps. She got her hickman catheter out in October. She has been braving all the needles for labs and IV's.
Friday, January 23rd, Leah had her A.I. Dupont appointments. She had a breathing treatment, labs, checkup, IV Chemo (Vincristine), and a spinal tap with Mex. Chemo. She has been very sore from her spinal tap this time and her stomach is very upset with the steroids. She has been very emotional and has been complaining of just not feeling well and I think she may of caught a head cold. I too have been suffering with a head cold and have not felt my best. We think we caught it on Friday at the hospital. Andy seems to feel better and Dale is still not feeling normal with his stomach yet. These things are minor in the whole picture! Overall we are doing just fine. God is so Good!!!
Breezy is currently at the hospital due to a fever and blood in her stools. She is on the clinical study through John Hopkins. Pray that God will continue to give them and the doctors wisdom for what is the right treatment for her and on what is causing the blood in her stools. Pray that God will allow this new medicine on the clinical study to work GREAT for Breezy. Pray for God to continue to give them strength. Breezy continues to be a strong and vibrant little girl living for Jesus!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is continuing with her treatments. Pray that the Lord will give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength to continue this cancer walk. Bridget will be having some testing in the beginning of February. Pray that the test results are great!!!!
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Sorry I haven’t updated in a while. It was truly a very busy December.
The Greenwood Mennonite School, Bethel Worship Center Youth Group, Delaware Federal Credit Union employees, co-workers, our Church Family, secret angels, family members, and friends helped make our Christmas a Christmas we will NEVER FORGET! We thank everyone for the love, kindness, generosity, gifts, food, and cards. God’s love working through you truly amaze us. WOW! But isn’t that how God is. We already had a Christmas gift from him of Leah being in remission and being here with us this Christmas. We feel totally undeserving of all these blessings, but are so thankful because we couldn’t make it without them. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Leah went to her A. I. Dupont appointment on December 26th. She had her breathing treatment, labs, chemo, and check up. Her spinal tap was rescheduled to January because the doctor was out. Her labs were good. She is experiencing some side effects, but managing well. She has had one night where she didn’t go to sleep until 7:00a.m. and got up at 8:30 a.m. Boy, how those steroids give her side effects (insomnia, upset stomach, acne, obsessive hunger, weight gain, moon face, puffed out belly, nightmares, anxiety, hyperactivity, lack of concentration, etc.) Overall I think each month either we are just adjusting to these side effects or things get a little easier every month. We are praying Leah will be able to go back to school with confidence in September of 2004. Leah returns to A.I. Dupont on January 23rd for a spinal tap, chemo, check up, labs, and a breathing treatment. We will let everyone know how that goes. We have 577 days of treatment left and have completed 322 days of treatment. We take it one day at a time. As always, she rarely complains and continues to have a good attitude. She knows God is our source of strength.
Not only did we have a fabulous Christmas; we had a wonderful New Year. We were invited to go back to the Ocean City beach house through the Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation. We arrived in Ocean City on December 29th and came home on January 3rd. We had a wonderful time. We were given tickets to see the O.C. Winterfest Lights and play putt putt golf. We were given a coupon to eat out and to a gift shop. God is so Good. We only had to pay for any extra food and activities. We came home rested and with a clearer mental picture of things. Boy, did we need that time!
Breezy is currently at the hospital due to a fever. They believe it may be from a virus or possible from her Leukemia. She will be starting a clinical study through John Hopkins for her leukemia on Monday, January 12th. They currently just finished preliminary testing for this study. Pray that God will continue to give them and the doctors wisdoms for what is the right treatment for her. Pray that God will allow this new medicine on the clinical study to work GREAT for Breezy. Pray for God to continue to give them strength. Breezy continues to be a strong and vibrant little girl living for Jesus!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is continuing with her treatments. Pray that the Lord will give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength to continue this cancer walk.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
PLEASE READ THE ATTACHED CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER -- IT IS BELOW. (THANKS!)
We had the privilege to go the Greenwood Mennonite School yesterday and speak about LeahÂ’s cancer journey. Leah also performed her drama. She performed three separate times, once for the middle school, high school, and elementary school. We got such a blessing being able to go and share with them. The Lord is so good! Yesterday we went to the school, got labs done, had her eyeglasses adjusted, picked up a few groceries, and took Andy to guitar practice. Leah is exhausted today!!!
Leah over all is doing fine. She has been experiencing some side effects from the steroids and chemo, however, she is managing well. We got her labs back today and her counts are wonderful. We will be going to A.I. Dupont on December 26th for a spinal tap, chemo, check up, labs, and a breathing treatment. We will let everyone know how that goes.
Andy is doing great! He is doing so well in guitar practice. He is excited how well he is playing the guitar. We told him he would have to perform for all the grandparents. Andy and Leah are counting down the days until Christmas.
Breezy is home and it is her birthday today. She is feeling well. She has been a little emotional from the steroids. Her white blood count continues to be high which is showing cancer activity. Barbara said other than the lab reports you wouldnÂ’t know that she is sick. We are believing that Breezy will continue to be home for Christmas. Barbara is checking into 2nd opinions for Breezy. Pray that God will give them and the doctors wisdoms for what is the right treatment for. Pray that God will continue to give them strength.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She has recently finished a round of chemo. This can cause her a lot of side effects. Please pray the Lord will minimize the side effects so she doesnÂ’t have to suffer. Pray that the Lord will give Bridget and her mom, Laura, strength to continue this cancer walk.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
The Dixon Family
December 2003 --Annual Christmas Letter
Merry Christmas!!
We are praising the Lord for his goodness in our lives. We have so much to be thankful for this year. Yes, we have had struggles, but we have been blessed in so many ways.
As many of you know, Leah was diagnosed in February 2003 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She has completed approximately 300 days of her more intense chemotherapy treatments and is in remission. She has approximately 599 days left of long term maintenance chemotherapy. These chemo treatments are to keep her in remission. She experiences side effects from her treatments on a regular basis; however, she continues to have a good attitude. Her hair is growing back. She has endured much this year; however, she rarely complains. She knows God is her strength.
Andy is doing well. He played soccer in the fall and plans to play again in the spring. We are home schooling this year and both Andy and Leah are doing well. Andy likes science and history the best. He is taking guitar lessons from a friend of the family and seems to really enjoy it. He continues to be a great help at home and with his sister.
Dale is still working for the State of Delaware – Fleet Services. He has been there for 14 years. With God’s strength and support from co-workers, friends, and church family he has been able to keep it together at work and home. We are praising God for his goodness.
Vickie is no longer working outside the home because of LeahÂ’s medical needs and treatments. She has been the primary caretaker of LeahÂ’s medical journey. She remains ever so busy with home schooling and LeahÂ’s appointments. She has had support from family, other children cancer families, friends, and church family. Thank the Lord for his mercy and strength.
We stand in awe of how God has used YOUR kindness, generosity, and compassion to meet our needs. We have felt so undeserving of all your help. God has so often reminded us of his grace. Thank you so much for blessing our family. We pray that somehow we have been a blessing to you too. We do so want to be used by God for his ministry.
This year we believe we have a clearer picture of what really matters in life. It truly is Jesus Christ, family, and the simpler things. We try not to take anything for granted. Through Jesus Christ we have found our family closer than ever and for this we are deeply grateful. Leah has received a second chance in life; what an awesome gift to receive! May this Christmas be a Christmas where God’s love fills your heart and you experience a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”—Jer. 29:11
Merry Christmas,
Dale, Vickie, Andy & Leah Dixon
Saturday, December 6, 2003
I am writing this update with my heart feeling very heavy. Breezy is still in the hospital. She has been on high doses of steroids which has caused her some psychotic episodes. She is doing better with the psychotic episodes; however, the family was just notified that Breezy's Leukemia has returned. They will be meeting with the oncologist on Monday for the next game plan. My heart goes out to Barbara from a mother to a mother. They have been through so much all ready.
Now on a brighter side we know that God Almighty is in control. We know there is a bigger picture to this all and we must trust in the Lord and not to our own understanding. I told Barbara that she and her family are planting seeds at A.I. DuPont. The nurses and doctors know that they are Christians and have seen Jesus Christ working through them. Barbara told me last night when Breezy and her were saying their prayers, Barbara ended and said "Amen". She asked Breezy if she was going to say amen, but then realized that Breezy was still praying. She was praying for the nurses! Breezy is not even three yet and she is a prayer warrior. We like to know why we go through this journey; I know that Breezy is being used by God to witness to the doctors and nurses. What a testimony she has. She will be turning three just before Christmas.
Lets pray God will continue to strengthen them. That he will minister to the doctors and show them what treatment they should be doing. Barbara wants to be home for Christmas and Breezy's birthday. Lets pray God would open the doors for this to happen. Agree with us that Breezy is completely healed in the name of Jesus!!!
Now for our darling daughter Leah. She continues to be in remission. We continue with maintenance chemotherapy with a little less than a year and a half to go. We are not facing life and death situations right now; but we face our daily battles with side effects from the steroids and chemo medications. As of the current side effects we are facing: upset stomach,insomnia, mood swings, nerve and bone pain intermittently, muscle weakness at times, extreme hunger pains with some weight gain, impulsiveness, lack of concentration, and some anxiousness. The list could go on. Three major things that the doctors are watching are 1) intermittent blurriness in the right eye with twitching; 2) her right foot slaps down when walking (which could mean neurotoxicity); and 3) her hearing (she continues to complain she can't hear things when they are blaring loud). Also the steroid that Leah is on can cause cataracts. Please pray about these side effects. Although they are not life threatening, they are affecting her daily living. For the most part Leah never complains. She just adapts, laughs, sings, and praises God for his goodness. She is so strong!
When I look around we have so much to be thankful for!! God has sustained us thus far and He will continue too. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Thank you Jesus for your love and mercy. Pray that our family will
be an encouragement to others. We want to bless others.
The Lord has sent a friend for Andrew to play with. Andy has prayed a long time for some companionship. Pray that God will send Leah a faithful friend. She really misses her friends from school and hasn't heard from them in a while.
Bridget is home from the hospital. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. Her counts have rebounded and she is doing well.
Thank you all for your faithfulness and kindness to our family. Your prayers and support mean so much to us.
Love in Christ,
Vickie Dixon
UPDATED MONDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The whole family worked together and everything was a pleasure. Dale was off Thursday and Friday and the kids were off from homeschool. We enjoyed spending time together without the daily rush of things that tend to cause stress. It was wonderful!!!! Did I already say that it was wonderful? (smile)
Leah had lab work the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Her counts came up and she was put back on her daily and weekly oral chemo. We were also taken off of home isolation. Yeah! She has been experiencing her side effects again from the chemo. The normal stuff – upset stomach, headache, blurry eyes, insomnia, nerve and bone pain, some muscle weakness intermittently, eye twitching, etc. Overall we can not complain! These things are not life threatening.
Leah’s hair continues to grow. Right now it is thickening. She was able to wear some baby barrettes the other day. Leah liked that. She gets tired of some people calling her a boy. I just tell her they need their eyes check. Anyone can tell she is a girl if they look at her. She is beautiful!!
We go back to A.I. duPont this Thursday. Leah will have her breathing treatment, labs, checkup with the doctor, and her IV chemo. We will let you know how that goes.
Please keep Andy in prayer. Sibling rivalry has been at its peak lately. It is hard for him to see Leah get gifts or attention from others. She got a "goody box" given to her for Thanksgiving. He understands why she gets gifts or attention; however, he still finds himself with feelings of jealousy. He says, "Why can't they think of me too?" If you get time would you email him or send him a card. His email address is: dixon_andy@yahoo.com
Our mailing address is below. Thanks.
We want to again thank everyone for the caring support. You all made it possible for us to have Thanksgiving. We appreciate the phone calls, cards, dinners, love offerings, guest book signings, and kindness that everyone has shown us. We truly could not make it without you. We continue to be amazed of how God is meeting our needs through caring people like you. We pray that the Lord will bless you bountiful for your kindness!!!! Thank you!
Breezy has been in the hospital recovering from a viral infection. She is recovering well but had a rocky start. Her white blood count continues to be high and they are doing a bone marrow biopsy today to make sure everything is okay. Please pray that the results are normal and that her white count will come down to normal. She should be discharged tomorrow from the hospital, Lord willing.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She has been experiencing some side effects from her latest treatment. Her counts are low and she has been on IV antibiotics for an infection. She is neutropenic and with an infection this can be life threatening if her counts do not rebound. Please pray that her body is healed from this infection and that her bone marrow will make cells so her blood counts can be normal.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
URGENT PRAYER NEEDED
Please pray for Leah! She had blood work done yesterday and her ANC Count has dropped to 406. Once again Leah is Neutropenic, which means she is house confined as her immune system cannot fight against bacterial or viral infections. She has been taken off of 2 chemo drugs until her ANC count returns to normal.
During maintenance therapy she shouldn't become neutropenic but her journey hasn't been normal and we know that God is her Healer and your prayer support moves mountains for Leah.
There is Power in Prayer,
Mom Mom Cohee
P.S. Breezy has had an unexplained drop in her platelets and increase in white blood cells. Please pray for her counts to regulate and that this is not due to unseen residual leukemia cells. We rather it be caused by a virus or possible medicine or even just a fluke. We claim Breezy's healing in the name of Jesus!
Quick update:
Leah had her surgery to have her Hickman catheter removed on last Thursday. It went well. I cried in the recovery room thinking about this milestone in her therapy. She is getting better and I know she is getting better. I just have to soak it all in because she has been through so much. To think I can let my guard down a little is just a little scary. You live on edge for so long and all of a sudden we seem to be in the safety zone and it can be hard to accept. In my spirit man I know, by the grace of God, she is completely healed, doing wonderful, and never going to face this again. In my flesh I think what if she gets it back, what about the side effects of her current chemo, how are we going to make it with 1 1/2 years of chemo to go, what if she catches something, what if her counts drop too low, what if she loses more of her hearing, can I really let her go without a mask, etc? The list goes on. I know I have to place her completely in God's hands and stop coming up with "what ifs". God is big enough to take care of the whole universe, he certainly can take care of Leah and our family.
She has been sore during her recovery from surgery; however, Tylenol is controlling this. We took the bandage off today. She will keep the teri-strips on a little longer. She does have some bruising, but it looks good. She is allowed to take a shower today. Leah is a little anxious about taking one since she is still a little sore.
She has said she is so happy that her tubies are out. She said she can handle taking chemo in her hand to have some freedom from the line. She is looking forward to swimming!
Overall she is doing great. She continues to have some side effects (insomnia, emotional roller coasters, anxiousness, tummy aches, hand tremors, bone pain, headaches, eye twitching, lack of concentration, hunger pains, etc. )from the medicines, however, we are making adjustments with school and schedules to try to manage these side effects. We are praising God for his goodness!!!!!
Breezy and Barbara are finally home from the hospital!!! Praise the Lord! She is doing super!!
Bridget has another treatment tomorrow. She is doing well. Praise the Lord!
We love and appreciate you all!!!
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Leah’s throat is completely better. It looks like it was a yeast infection in her throat. She will continue to stay on the Diflucan to prevent this.
Leah had her appointment on Thursday, 11/6th. It was a full day. She did her breathing treatment with no problems. Her ANC was over 3000, which is totally awesome.
She had her hearing test done. They found that her right ear has a mild hearing loss. It is just one pitch she can not hear. They suggested that Leah watch lips while we are talking to help compensate her hearing. At this point they are going to keep an eye on this. We will in the future have a recheck hearing test.
Yesterday, Leah took her Vincristine chemo in her hand, instead of her Hickman Catheter. She did great! She sat still, cried just a little, and when the needle was in, she stopped crying. The nurses asked Leah if she was ready to take her chemo in her hand on a regular basis so she could get her catheter out. She said she wanted it out! She will have surgery on Thursday, 11/13th, to have her catheter out. Pray things will go smoothly!
Leah started her second round of steroids on maintenance. Already she has started her emotional roller coaster, hunger pains, lack of concentration, and stomach aches. It is hard to believe you can cry, laugh, yell, be starving, complain about an upset stomach, be tired, and wired all in the same half hour. This is her second day and her third dose and she already can’t sleep. Last night no nightmares, she just couldn’t sleep. Please pray that she will sleep 8 to 10 hours per a night. The Onc. doctors are concerned with her lack of sleep. They are consulting with a neurologist about Leah’s problem. They are concerned that the steroids are affecting her REM cycle. I do not want her to be put on sleeping pills; she is already on so many medications. Please pray that God will touch her and she will sleep regular without medication. It is after 10:30 p.m. and she just ate a corndog and is playing with play dough. (Smile)
Other than the side effects, Leah is doing wonderful. Her hair is growing back. She looks good. Her counts are looking just fine. We are so, so, so, thankful for God’s mercy, compassion, and strength. He is a wonderful God!!!! We keep reminding ourselves what we are going through now is nothing compared to what we have been through earlier in her treatments. God is so Good!!
We want to again thank everyone for the caring support. We appreciate the phone calls, cards, dinners, love offerings, guest book signings, and kindness that everyone has shown us. We truly could not make it without you. We continue to be amazed of how God is meeting our needs through caring people like you. We pray that the Lord will bless you bountiful for your kindness!!!! Thank you!
Breezy is doing great! She got back her Bone marrow biopsy results and things are looking GREAT! She has no residual cancer cells!!!! Praise the Lord!!! She has 100 percent donor cells!!! This is totally awesome! She will be discharged from the Ronald McDonald House in less than two weeks. WOW!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She has been experiencing some side effects from her latest treatment.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission. I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
Quick update:
Leah has been experiencing a sore throat this week. We have been checking her throat daily and taking her temperature. She has had no fever; however, when we checked her throat last night, she had a white patch on the left back side of her throat. It literally looks like a chunck of cottage cheese. Yuck!!! We called the Onc. clinic today and they immediately put her back on her Diflucan (a medicine to prevent yeast) and sent us to our local doctor to have a strep test. The test came back negative. Praise the Lord! We don't need those complications!! For now as long as she is not running a fever or things get worse, we will not have to go up to A.I. Dupont. She has a scheduled appointment for A.I. Dupont this coming Thursday, 11/6th.
Leah is sleeping a little better. So far we just can not get her normal sleeping patterns back with all this new medicine. We put her to bed at 9:30p.m. and she stays awake in bed till about 12:00 to 12:30 a.m. She will stay asleep until morning once she falls asleep. Praise the Lord! I am feeling better with getting more sleep. Please continue to pray for Leah because next week we start another round of that steriod medicine that caused all these sleeping problems. Pray her body can adjust and go back to normal sleeping patterns and no nightmares or anxiety.
Breezy is doing great! She got back part of her Bone marrow biopsy results and things are looking GREAT! She has no residual cancer cells!!!! Praise the Lord!!!
We will update again if anything changes before our appointment, otherwise, we will update on next Friday. Thank you all for your prayers and support. WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!
Love in Christ,
Vickie
UPDATE ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2003
Many are asking us for an update. We are sorry we haven't updated sooner.
Leah overall is doing well. As I stated before we have started maintenance therapy. This is day 14 in our maintenance. The first 10 days have been a little rough for her. Leah has experienced some side effects from all the new oral medicines. She has had emotional upsets, nightmares, upset stomach, hunger pains, nerve and bone pain, hands shaking, insomnia, weakness, can't seem to focus during school, and hyperactivity. It has been a roller coaster. The last few days have been mostly good; however, she is still having problems sleeping. Most of the nightmares have subsided and she is at least sleeping some (about four hours). Praise the Lord! As per school, some days Leah is on and flies through her work. Other days, she struggles to concentrate and write. I am so glad that we chose to homeschool so we can adjust as we need to and not lose any ground. We were under the impression that maintenance was going to be easier. Hopefully Leah's body will adjust and it will get easier on a regular basis. We have 1 1/2 years of this and I don't do well without sleep!!!
We go back to A.I. on 11/6. Leah is scheduled for labs, a breathing treatment, I.V. chemo, a check up, and a hearing test. Please pray about this hearing test. Pray that the results from this test are accurate and that her hearing is normal. (As many of you know she has been experiencing intermittent hearing problems. We informed the doctor what she has been experiencing and we were informed one of the medicines Leah was on could cause (rare) hearing loss.) Also on this appointment Leah will receive her chemo in a vein in her hand. She normally receives it through her Hickman Catheter. This will be the first time in her hand. Pray that Leah will have peace and not be scared. Pray that she will keep still so she will not receive a burn from the chemo, which could happen if she is moving around. If things go well in her hand, they will consider taking out the catheter. Leah is anticipating getting it out. She is so tired of dressing changes, no showers, nightly flushes, and anxiousness of infection or some type of breakage to her line.
We are so grateful that overall Leah is doing well. We have seen the hand of God move in her life and we know he will continue to work in our lives. I must be honest and say I have been a little down lately. I think I am just plain tired out. When I think of having a year and half to go, it can get overwhelming. It is overwhelming physically, emotionally, and financially. I feel like we have been in a race. When we first started we had the get up and go. Now we are somewhat in the middle and feeling a little tired. I know God is my rock and shield. I know I can run to my Abba Father for his strength. I know we will get through this. Leah has been an inspiration to me. She rarely complains about all the treatments, appointments, medicines, and discomforts. She may mention things going on, but she never complains about them (other than her brother -- normal sibling stuff -- smile)
We Love you all!! Thank you for praying and caring about us!!!! Thank you for your support.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
P.S. Brianna is doing well. Her test came back and has been little inconclusive, but the doctors are pleased with what information they did get back. She had a bone marrow biopsy today. We should have the results back next week. She is feeling good and up and about. She has physical, aquatic, and occupational therapy weekly. Please continue to pray for this family. They have been a big support to ours. We know God put us together!!
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. Her mid point treatment testing went well. Her treatment time has been shortened due to her progress. Praise the Lord.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission.
I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
URGENT REQUEST:
As many of you already know, Brianna had her transplant on Thursday, 9/18/2003. She is very active, eating well, and sleeping through the night. She will we released to the Ronald McDonald House for a while to be monitored closely by the hospital and receive medicines. Barbara has requested urgent prayer because the doctors are concerned about a high count of monocytes. This high count could be residual cancer cells or just the donor cells. We are praying that it is just the donor cells. Please pray in agreement with us that when they test her blood that these cells will show that they are from the donor. This is apparently easy to tell because the donor was male. When I hear more I will post an update. We know God is in control! Pray for peace, strength and continued encouragement for this family.
Now for the Dixon family, we had our appointment on 10/9 at A.I. duPont. Boy, was it a long day! Leah’s counts were high enough to have her spinal tap and receive her IV chemo. This officially starts Leah’s maintenance chemotherapy. She came home with a new regimen for oral medicines. She is back on Decatron for 5 day pulses every 28 days. This is a steroid that tends to make Leah very emotional, cause an upset stomach, lack of concentration, extreme hunger (yes, extreme hunger) ,and even give her nightmares. She is already experiencing some of these. She will also be taking two oral chemo’s at home, which are: 6MP (she takes everyday) and Methotrexate (she takes once a week). Both new oral chemo’s can cause a drop in counts and of course other side effects. The doctors will be monitoring her counts the next couple of months to adjust her doses where her counts will not drop too low. She will now have quarterly spinal taps and monthly appointments for IV chemo and breathing treatments. The spinal taps and IV chemo have side effects too. However, the worst is behind us and we will continue with maintenance chemo for approximately 1 1/2 years. PRAISE THE LORD and THANK YOU JESUS!
In the next couple of months, Leah should be getting her Hickman catheter out. This is taking a little longer than we had wished for; however, we are closer than before. (smile) Also, in the next month or so, she will be able to return to school; however, we will continue home schooling. This means she will be able to go in public with less worry about wearing a mask or that her counts are too low. Dale and I will not know what to do with ourselves - such freedoms we will all have! The Lord is so Good!
I have had several people asking me how Leah is doing with her treatments. Is she where she needs to be? Yes! The last bone marrow biopsy showed zero cancer blasts. She is in remission! As long as Leah doesn’t have a relapse or the cancer cells go to her central nervous system we are where we need to be! As I said before we are in maintenance chemo for 1 1/2 years and this should keep a relapse from happening - by the Grace of God a relapse will not happen. When we finish maintenance chemo, we will still be seen monthly for blood work and check ups.
I would ask everyone to please continue to pray for Leah that she will experience very little side effects, if any. Some of the chemo’s she is taking are neurotoxins and can cause all sorts of scary side effects that can be permanent. Please pray that the Lord will protect her organs. I know God can do this for he has gotten us this far. He is faithful! Please continue to pray for our finances. We truly live by faith. He again has been faithful and I know he will supply all our needs.
We want to continue to thank all of you that have been faithful and caring to keep in contact with us. You will never truly understand how much it means to us that we have not been forgotten. We appreciate and sincerely thank you for every prayer, email, card, phone call, meal, gift, hug, hand shake, word of encouragement, love offering, journal entry on Leah’s website, and any other act of kindness you have done for us. We love and appreciate you all! We pray that the Lord will bless you in return for your kindness.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is having some mid point treatment testing done.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission.
I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
We appreciate and sincerely thank you for every prayer, email, card, phone call, meal, gift, hug, hand shake, word of encouragement, love offering, journal entry on Leah’s website, and any other act of kindness you have done for us. We love and appreciate you all! We pray that the Lord will bless you in return for your kindness.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is having some mid point treatment testing done.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please continue to pray for Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission.
I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
Wednesday, October 8th
Truly just a quick update:
Friday, October 3rd, Leah's counts were 1400. Leah and family went to The Light the Night Cancer Walk on Saturday! It was a great evening. The kids enjoyed themselves. We go to our A.I. duPont appointment tomorrow. We will update further on the walk and how her appointment went on Friday. Thanks! We love you!
Thursday, October 2, 2003
Sorry for the delay on updating Leah’s website, we have been very busy.
We had our appointment on 9/25 at A.I. duPont. Leah’s ANC counts were 1600 and high enough to receive her last dose of escalating chemo. She has been very active and feeling pretty good. She has not experienced stomach distress and mouth sores like she did last time! Praise the Lord! She has been having some bone and nerve pain. This has been mostly in the evening and we have been able to control it with Tylenol. I am so thankful she is doing so well. We return on 10/9 to A.I. duPont to have a check up, lab work, and if her counts are over 1000, she will receive a spinal tap with chemo and IV chemo. Counts permitting, this officially starts Leah’s Maintenance Chemotherapy, which will be for 1 1/2 years. This means the worst is behind us and in the next couple of months, Lord willing, Leah will have her Hickman Catheter taken out. PRAISE THE LORD and THANK YOU JESUS!
The visiting nurse will come out on Friday, 10/3 to do labs on Leah. If her counts are over 1000, we will be going to the Light the Night Cancer Walk at Rehoboth Beach on Saturday. The Delaware Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society sponsors this. Leah has been selected to be a Patient Hero for this event. Leah and I have been asked to say a few words at the walk. Registration for the walk starts at 5:00 p.m. and runs through 6:45 p.m. Registration will take place at the intersection of the Boardwalk and Olive Street. There will be children’s carnival games and fun things to do from 5:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. At 6:45 p.m. there will be a few speakers for about ten to fifteen minutes to kick the walk off. The walk starts at 7:00 p.m. and is about two miles on the Boardwalk and ends when you are finished. IF YOU CAN MAKE IT, WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE!!
Leah and Andrew said home schooling is going “great”! That is at least today. (smile) Overall I feel it is going well. They do miss their friends. We are always fine tuning things to make them go smoother. I do LOVE to teach and with home schooling I can still teach and take care of my children. God is so good. It has been quite a bit of work with two different curriculums and appointments, but it gets a little easier every week. I am very thankful that the Lord blessed us to be able to do this this year. Andy is playing soccer this fall and a wonderful friend is teaching him how to play the guitar. He says he is having fun and appreciates being able to do them. This is giving us some time to get out and have some socialization.
Thank you for supporting our family with prayers, love offerings, words of encouragement, cards, and many acts of kindness. We love you all! We couldn’t have made it thus far nor could we make it without you all. We are truly amazed and grateful of how God has used you in our lives. THANK YOU!
Please continue to pray for Dale and myself. We do so want to be used by God for His ministry. We know that we are different people since Leah’s diagnoses. What things were of great value before, mean nothing to us today. We try to be a support family for other cancer families and educate others about a Leukemia journey; however, we want to do more. Pray that Dale and I will have wisdom, peace, and assurance to know what He wants us to do. I know God has a special plan for my family.
As many of you already know, Brianna had her transplant on Thursday, 9/18/2003. Over all she is doing well too. She had an ANC of 200 yesterday. This is wonderful for her! She just ended a round of steroids that made her “out of control” hyper (yes, “out of control” hyper). She was put on Valium during this round of steroids so she wouldn’t hurt herself. This did help some. She would stay up past 2:00 a.m. watching movies; however, that was better than jumping on the bed. (smile) Please continue to keep Barbara in your prayers; she is exhausted and needs a good night sleep. We know God is in control! Pray for peace, strength and encouragement for this family.
Please continue to pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin's. She is doing well; however, she has had some problem with her treatment.
Also, please continue to pray for Christopher, Nicole, Jaquanna and Thomas. They all have leukemia.
Please pray for a dear friend of mine, Charlotte. Her cancer is currently active. Please pray that the Lord will put her in remission and keep her in remission.
In the Name of Jesus I speak life into these precious ones. I curse every cancer cell and I believe for their complete healing in the Name of Jesus.
In Christ,
Vickie Dixon
Just a quick update:
Overall, Leah has been doing just fine. She has experienced some mouth and stomach sores, but nothing major. Her stomach is extremely upset in the morning and extremely upset in the evening. So far she has not thrown up. PRAISE THE LORD! We did get blood counts done by the visiting nurse. Leah’s counts remain good right now. Her ANC is 3000. This is expected to fall. We return to A.I. duPont on 9/25th. She will be having a breathing treatment, lab work, check up, and if counts are acceptable, she will receive her escalating chemo. We still have not received a date for her hearing test. I will let you know when I get that information. At times, she continues to have problems hearing.
Brianna had her transplant on Thursday, 9/18/2003. She has experienced some high blood pressure. She is currently on medication to bring it down. The doctors say this is normal for this to happen for the next 30 days. She is currently on pain medicine and 4 mouthwashes for mouth, throat and stomach sores. She has been running a fever, having diarrhea, and terrible painful bowel cramping. Please pray that her body can regulate her bowels, that her fever will come down, her mouth continues to heal, and she will eat. Please continue to keep Barbara in your prayers; she is exhausted and needs a good night sleep. We know God is in control! Pray for peace, strength and encouragement for this family. I know we can grow weary when we haven’t had rest and we see our children suffering.
UPDATED BEFORE ON 9/15/2003:
We went to our clinic appointment today. Leah had lab work, a spinal tap with chemo, and her escalating chemo with Vincristine. It was a full day; however, we made out just fine.
Leah has already begun experiencing some stomach distress. This is caused by the escalating chemo. It also causes stomach sores, throat sores, and mouth sores. It also makes her counts drop. Please pray that the Lord will minimize her side effects and protect her organs.
We are counting the days when we will be on Maintenance chemo. This will start in a little less than a month. When we start maintenance, we will only go once a month for chemo treatments, quarterly spinal taps, and take chemo medicines at home. This section of Leah's treatment will last a little longer than 1 1/2 years. God has been so faithful and good to us. I thank the Lord for his strength and mercy.
Home schooling is still going well. We are slowly adjusting to our new schedule. We praise the Lord that we were able to home school this year. The Lord is so Good!
Again, we wish to thank everyone that sent Andy a birthday card. We just can’t say it enough -- thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support with prayers, phone calls, emails, journey entries, cards, words of encouragement and love offerings. We couldn't make it without you! Jesus Christ is truly AMAZING!!!!
Continue to pray for Breezy. Her Bone Marrow Transplant is this Thursday, 9/18. She has finished her radiation treatments with just a few side effects. Praise the Lord!! She now is undergoing intense (and I mean intense) chemotherapy to kill all her white blood cells. Barbara, her mother, told me today that Breezy has a negative white blood cell count. When I saw Breezy today she was clinging to her mother's lap, but she was playing and having a good time. The Lord is so Good! Her mom is concerned because she is starting to refuse to eat. Please pray that she will eat to keep her strength up. My heart is very heavy for Barbara. In some ways I know exactly how she is feeling and in other ways I don't. Please fervently pray for them and especially on the 18th. Her weblink is below.
Please pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin’s. She developed an infection in her leg. She had surgery to remove the abscess. She is doing well.
Continue to pray for Christopher from WV, Jaquanna from DE, and Thomas Yoder from DE they also have leukemia.
On Friday, September 5th, we went to the clinic. Leah’s counts are still low. Her ANC was 283. She needs to be above 1000. She was unable to get her 3rd dose of escalating chemo. She did get her dose of Vincristine. Leah continues to be on house arrest (isolation). We return to A.I. on Monday, September 15th. Leah will be having lab work, a spinal tap, more Vincristine, and hopefully escalating chemo.
Leah has had some problems with headaches, an upset stomach, some bone pain, and some loss of balance. Not major problems, praise the Lord! She has been complaining of not hearing well. The Doctor checked her ears and they visually look wonderful. They will be doing a hearing test on one of our upcoming appointments. One of the antibiotics Leah was on for her bone infection, in rare instances, can cause hearing loss. They will we doing this test just to make sure she is fine. In the name of Jesus she is fine!!!!
Home schooling is still going well. We are adjusting to our new schedule. We praise the Lord that we were able to home school this year. The Lord is so Good!
We wish to thank everyone that sent Andy a birthday card. He was totally shocked when he went to the mailbox. We appreciate you all for taking the time to do this for Andy. We just can’t say it enough, thank you for your continued support with prayers, phone calls, emails, journey entries, cards, words of encouragement and love offerings. Jesus Christ is truly AMAZING!!!!
Continue to pray for Breezy. Please pray for peace and strength for the family. The bone marrow transplant has been rescheduled to September 18th. All this rescheduling can take a toll on you. Her leukemia is very active right now. Please continue to pray. Her weblink is below.
Please pray for Bridget. She is 14 and has Hodgkin’s. She has been having terrible, terrible, terrible bone pain with her treatments. This pain keeps her up through the night and pain medicine doesn’t seem to help. Please lift her up during her intense treatment.
Continue to pray for Christopher from WV, Jaquanna from DE, and Thomas Yoder from DE they also have leukemia.
Just a quick update:
On Friday, August 29th, Leah’s counts dropped. Her ANC dropped to 99 and her hemoglobin dropped to 7.1. Her platelets did come up to 32. Because her hemoglobin was so low we had to go up to A.I. Dupont on Friday evening for a red blood transfusion. We got back home on Saturday around 2:00 a.m.
Leah is still on house arrest (isolation). Her ANC needs to come up to 1000. We return to A.I. on Friday, September 5th. Even though Leah’s counts have been low she has been active and overall feeling well. She has had some minor upset tummy problems.
We started home schooling today. Leah and Andy will be home schooled for this school year. I think things went pretty well for the first day! Leah loves school and school work.
We wish to continue to thank everyone for their continued support with prayers, phone calls, emails, journey entries, cards, words of encouragement and love offerings. I know we always say this, but we really mean it! We continue to be AMAZED of the love of Christ that shines through you all!!!!
Andy's birthday is on September 8th. If you get time, could you please send them a card. I know this would encourage them.
Our address is : 3058 Deep Grass Lane, Houston, DE 19954
(Thank you for doing this, sometimes Andy tends to feel left out when Leah gets all the cards -- He handles it pretty good overall)
Continue to pray for Breezy. Please pray for peace and strength for the family. The bone marrow transplant has been rescheduled to September 18th. Her weblink is below.
Continue to pray for Christopher from WV, Jaquanna from DE, and Thomas Yoder from DE they also have leukemia.
Also please pray for Bridget from DE she has been recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's. She is showing some improvement.
Hello everyone! Sorry we have not updated sooner. Things have been very busy.
Leah went to her clinic appointment on Monday, August 25th. Her ANC count had dropped from 5000 to 680 in one week. Her platelets dropped from 252 to 72 to 14. Because her counts dropped, she was unable to receive one of her escalating doses of chemo; however, she still could receive Vincristine. Vincristine is a chemo that they give no matter what her counts are. She also received a platelet transfusion. We are on house arrest (isolation) again. (SMILE) A visiting nurse will come out on Friday and do labs to check her counts. If her platelets or hemoglobin are low, we will have to drive up and get a transfusion on Friday evening.
Overall, Leah is doing fine. Just some minor upset tummy problems right now.
The Lord continues to be so so so Good!!!! We are thankful for his mercy and grace.
We wish to continue to thank everyone for their continued support with prayers, phone calls, emails, journey entries, cards, words of encouragement and love offerings. I know we always say this, but we really mean it! We continue to be AMAZED of the love of Christ that shines through you all!!!!
Also Dale's birthday is on September 1st and Andy's birthday is on September 8th. If you get time, could you please send them a card. I know this would encourage them.
Our address is : 3058 Deep Grass Lane, Houston, DE 19954
(Thank you for doing this, sometimes Andy tends to feel left out when Leah gets all the cards -- He handles it pretty good overall)
Continue to praying for Breezy. On September 1st, she will be admitted and on the 2nd she will start total body radiation to prepare her for the Bone Marrow Transplant. This can be very scary for the whole family. Please pray for peace and strength for the family and Breezy. Her body will go through things we just couldn't imagine. The actual transplant should happen on September 11th. Her weblink is below.
Continue to praying for Christopher from WV, Jaquanna from DE, and Thomas Yoder from DE they also have leukemia.
Also please pray for Bridget from DE she has been recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's. She is showing some improvement.
Tuesday, August 12, 2003 -- Quick update added Tuesday, August 19, 2003
August 19, 2003
Leah started her new round of treatment last Thursday. It was a long day, but she made out fine. We have not heard anything on the results of her spinal fluid lab. tests. When we do, we will let you know.
She has been experiencing some side effects from the chemo. She has been running a low grade fever, has had headaches on and off, upset stomach, some throwing up. She has been very light when it comes to eating and drinking. She just hasn't had the appetite and has been low on energy. We finally broke down and got her some Mountain Dew. We let her have a little bit and she is up and going for a spell. We are also very greatful for Zofran -- a medicine that helps her not to throw up!
We are so thankful things have not been worse. God has been so good to us. Please continue to keep her in your prayers!! We couldn't make it with out you all praying for us!!
Leah's next appointment is on the 25th. She will get her next round of escalating chemo.
In Christ,
Vickie
August 12, 2003
Leah has been home over ten days now. Her ANC counts rebounded from 40 to 2000 in just one week. God is so awesome!! Her counts have settled around 1500 as of last Thursday. Leah has enjoyed having a two week break in receiving chemo. We will be going to A.I. duPont on Thursday, August 14th. Our day starts early at 7:45 A.M. with a breathing treatment. We then report to the Hem/Onc clinic at 8:30 A.M. for labs. At 9:00 A.M. we see the Onc doctor. At 10:30 A.M. Leah will be getting a spinal tap (Pray that her spinal fluids continue to be free from any cancer blasts). After her recovery from her spinal tap, Leah will be receiving her first doses of chemo for her 2nd Interim Maintenance chemotherapy. This will entail two chemos given every ten days for 56 days. One of the chemos will be given in escalating doses of 50mg. In other words, every ten days they will increase Leah's chemo by 50 mg. until her body can't handle it anymore.
During Leah's 1st Interim Maintenance chemotherapy, Leah received 4 doses of this escalating chemo out of 5 doses. She started at 100mg. and ended with 250mg. They canceled her last dose when she developed a fever and her mouth and digestive tract broke out in painful sores. This time her doses will start out where she left off before her last dose that caused her mouth and digestive sores. She will start at 200mg. and continue to escalate by 50 mg. every ten days. Please pray that Leah's body will tolerate this chemo with very little side effects, if not any side effects. This chemo can be very toxic -- Pray that her organs are protected and her counts stay tolerable without problems.
We want to again send our appreciation to our faithful Brothers and Sisters in the Lord that continue to Pray for us, send encouragement, and love offerings. We continue and continue and continue to stand in amazement of how the Lord uses you to meet our needs. We love and appreciate you all!!!!
Pray that He continues to mold and shape us to be useful vessels for His Ministry. We so want to be in His Will and His Plan!!!! God Is So GOOD!!!!
In Christ,
Vickie
Continue to praying for Breezy she will have the BMT in September, her weblink is below.
Continue to praying for Christopher from WV and Jaquanna from DE they also have leukemia.
Also please pray for a girl by the name of Bridget from DE she has been recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's, we are believing for healing miracles for all these children.
Friday, August 1, 2003 7:58 PM CDT
We will be updating in the next few days...
Leah is home, praise the Lord! In fact I called her room at the hospital and get a little girl by the name of Jaquanna. She is 10 years old and also has leukemia. I asked her if I could pray for her and she said yes. So can you keep her in your prayers too. So I called the house and no answer, so I called the cell phone and they were just about home. Leah's anc count went to 668 so they let her go home. The Doctor told Vickie yesterday that Leah wasn't making certain blood cells, today when Leah heard the news about her blood counts going up she said the doctor doesn't know what he's talking about. This is my girl trusting Jesus for her healing. Our God is faithful!
I am not sure if I mention that Leah has been selected as a Patient Hero for the Leukemia Society. God is going to use Leah mightly for His Glory.
Please don't forget Breezy her link is below. And don't forget to pray for Little Chris, he is 5 and lives in Berkeley Springs, WV...
Wednesday, July 30, 2003 8:07 PM CDT
Leah’s needs our extra prayers. Her blood counts have dropped extremely low, her anc count today is 40 on Monday it was at 20 so she has rebounded a little. This is the result of the chemotherapy. She woke up this morning feeling very sick. She was running a fever of 101.3 and very nauseated, muscle and join pain and a headache. As a precaution she has been admitted to AI DuPont Hospital for Children for 2 to 5 days we are believing for the lesser amount. They have her on an antibiotic and later this evening she will receive the last round of this nasty chemo that she has been on in this portion of intensification segment. With her counts low and the last round of chemo we need to agree together that God will intervene with an extra protection against and infections and protect her vital organs. Also pray for her little bottom, she has a fistula. Her bowels have been going from diarrhea to being constipated….no happy medium, so this has caused the tear inside. She is a trooper, I talked with this evening and she still can laugh that is good! I prayed with her and I got a Big Amen from her. So can we all say AMEN in agreement with her.
I know Leah will write a book about her Journey to her Healing.
An Update on Leah:
The new chemotherapy that Leah is currently on is very toxic. She is having a lot of joint pain, headaches, tummy distress and sores develop in her tender body parts. She is a trooper! We all stand amazed at her fortitude and strength that only comes from God. She already has a testimony…. And her testimony will just grow bigger for the Glory of our Lord and He has sustained her through her Journey of Healing. Her counts at the hospital had went up to 1500. She was able to share a room with another little girl and not be confined by herself. Leah is home bound for another week due to the chemo dropping her counts. I should have a count update later this week but continue to pray for God’s protection for her vital organs, her immune system, her blood counts, and for strength.
Vickie, Dale and Andy are holding up. The van, Dale replaced one part and it still wouldn’t start. I know that after I sent out the email that evening and we prayed the van started for no apparent reason it wouldn’t run, we prayed and it started. Their second car is still in the shop. The air conditioner should be repaired today. In the mean time our God reigns. Sunday the 13th the whole family was able to attend church together. When Dale walked into church he was given an envelope with 150.00 and during the service a lady sitting in front of them gave them 100.00 and yesterday they received another check in the mail for 100.00, our God is faithful. This just about covered the expenses on the van. They have been given another large window air conditioner and another small car is on the way. Their computers: one is fixed and I am sure by the time you read this their laptop will be fixed also. Isn’t God awesome!
*Please note the enemy is still trying them daily. Andy was getting out of the van and a storm had come up with a gust of wind and pulled the passenger door out of his hand, swinging the door completely around into the front quarter panel. This caused the front quarter panel to bend and the door is all twisted. All we know is that God is in control and the gates of hell shall not prevail.
Andy will be heading off to (he needs some R&R) Church Youth Camp this Thursday. Someone at their church paid the remaining balance on the trip for him to go. Isn’t God good! I know that we should be able to write a book at the daily miracles that have taken place through this Family Journey.
Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank all the faithful family and friends that pray for them daily, the phone calls, the gifts of love, cards of encouragement and emotional support that sustain along with the Love of our heavenly Father. Thank you to everyone that called and emailed to help fix their computers.
There is Power In Prayer,
Mom Mom Cohee
Please keep Brianna Mallory in your prayers. Her link is below to check out her progess.
Leah's counts are down and we need God to protect her from getting any infections. Thursday, Leah will have a bone marrow biopsy and a spinal - chemo and an IV chemo all at the Nemours Clinic. Then she will be admitted to the AI DuPont hospital to receive a new chemo - IV, they have to monitor her kidneys as this drug can shut down her kidneys. So this is intercession time for Leah asking God to protect all her vital organs and for no complications. .
Please pray for Vickie & Dale they are under a heavy attack by the enemy, there is a war going on. Thank God the battle belongs to the Lord. The air conditioner was supposed to fixed today but guess what.. the tech didn't order the right part so back to square one, in fact the AC chewed up the new fan the tech put in it. Their dodge van needed work done to its exhaust system and a water pump. They brought the car home from the garage and got ready to go back out to run a few errands and the van won't start. There other car is also in the shop because it didn't pass inspection. And I also helped corrupt their computers by installing new isp service (the cd had corrupted files on it) and now they don't have web access, so do we have anyone out there that is a computer specialist, Help!.
Their cup runneth over and their saucer is full and over flowing. I truly have not seen a family tested as they have been other then Job. With the everyday Journey to Healing for Leah they also have the Journey of Life and we know that sometimes when it rains it pours but right now they are having a thunder storm and we need to have the storm go out to sea speaking "Peace Be Still". So calling on all prayer warriors to intercede and bind the fiery darts of Satan and his imps. Lets go to the enemy's camp and take back what he has stolen from them, in Jesus Name. Our God reigns, they need a financial miracle and a dependable vehicle! I know our God can do it. Let's speak it into existence for them, we are their Aaron and Hur so lets raise their arms up in the battle.
Vickie, Dale, Leah and Andy are truly appreciative for everyone helping them during Leah's Journey to Healing. A Big God Bless You to you faithful ones that call, stop by, remember them daily in your prayers, your love gifts, food and financial gifts. They love you all so very much.
There is Power in Prayer.
Leah is doing well ... her blood counts are fine. And her body is doing what it's supposed to do after chemo. Her blood counts drop and then go back up within a few days. She has only minor tummy discomfort and does she get very tired. Also pray for her little bottom, God is concerned about every part of us. The chemo has caused irritation in this area so pray that no infection occurs.
On July 17th at the clinic she will get a spinal tap with chemo and will be admitted to the hospital overnight to begin phase 2 of intensification ... this new chemo can shut down her kidneys so it is important that we pray and then she will to the clinic in 3 days for more chemo finishing up this segment with a visiting nurse at their house. Her counts will drop very low during this time. So can we agree together that her body will rebound fast, that God protects her vital organs, and she has minimal or no side affects.
Please keep Mom, Dad, Leah and Andy in your prayers. Along with the journey of Leah's healing life can bring a few curve balls when you lest expect it. Their house air conditioner died on July 4th with temps in the high 90's. This family has been tested to the limits. Naturally you can't get a repair person on July 4th weekend. So please pray that God opens a door so they can get the air conditioner fixed real fast.
No, they didn't stay at their house, they packed up their things and stayed with us in Delaware at a friend's house. I was able to get them 2 small air conditioners so they could go back home. And just when things are going along I think I broke their modem card to their laptop and now their isp on their desktop isn't working. Are we having fun yet..... everyday is a new day with our Lord and Master and I am so glad that He is in the miracle working business watching over us and knows our course to our journeys of life.
Please pray that their journey gets a new road map with some roses along the way without a lot of thorns. We thank you for all your prayers, card of encouragements, gifts of love and visits.
Continue to pray for Brianna Mallory. Click here to read about her journey to healing She is back in the hospital. Her leukemia is active and her white blood cell count is too high. She will be there for at least five days to receive intense chemotherapy. Lets continue to lift her family up in prayer for peace and strength.
Here’s a brief update on Leah. Her counts were up to 4,000 this past week and she is doing well. Naturally every day is a new day for Leah as the chemotherapy increases with each treatment. She experiences a lot of tummy distress and headaches. I hope I have this information correct. Please continue to pray in agreement with us that her counts stay up, that God protects her vital organs, and that she has minimal or no side affects.
Can you also please pray that God will intervene in their finances? We know our God shall supply all their need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Vickie was anticipating her pay checks from the Christian school where she worked until the end of August but she got her last pay check the second week of June. And at the present time the school did not renew her contract to teach for the next school year. They know that God is their source but it does get a little scary when you were planning for one thing and then it becomes now and it’s different. I can not imagine how any family without friends, family and God going through this journey alone.
We thank you for all your prayers, card of encouragements, gifts of love and visits.
Continue to pray for Brianna.
Leah has been in house confinement for a week now. Her ANC counts were 600 last Monday, 480 last Tuesday, and 700 on Friday. I think she is getting a little cabin fever. (SMILE) It looks like we are going up on the counts. Praise the Lord. Keep praying that they will be above 1000 by the 19th.
We are starting her intensification therapy on the 19th. It is hard to believe it is here. This period will last for two months and is the hardest part of her therapy. We are anxious about starting it and in the same breath we want to get it over with. WE KNOW GOD IS IN CONTROL! We know we can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens us.
Please pray that Dale, Leah, Andrew and I can rest in Jesus' arms and have peace through this. Pray that the Lord will have mercy on Leah for she has been through so much all ready. Pray that we can be used by God during this time. That people will see the love of Christ and the strength of God in us and doctors, nurses, patients, and unsaved souls that we come in contact with will have their hearts changed through our witness for Christ. Pray that every organ and part of Leah's body will be protected from infection and side effects from the chemotherapy. Pray that Leah's counts will be where the chemotherapy can do its job; however not so low that she has further complications. Pray that Andrew will find rest and restoration this summer for he has been through so much too. Pray that Dale, Andrew, Leah, and I will continue to grow spiritually through this trial and be molded and shaped to what God wants us to be.
We want to once again thank you all for your prayers and support. We can not make it without Brothers and Sisters in the Lord lifting us up. Every gift, phone call, card, meal, love offering, etc. has not gone unnoticed. We appreciate all of you.
Continue to pray for Brianna.
Leah had a fun time at the Children's House by the Sea! A short stay but a time well spent by Leah, Andy Mom & Dad. Andy had a great time at Camp Can Do.
Leah headed back to the Nemours Clinic today. Her central-line has a discharge around the line near her chest. This is all precautionary.... she didn't have to stay praise the Lord. Her ANC count is down to 600, so Leah is confined to the house. She is disappointed because she wanted to be able to go to see everyone at school as tomorrow is the last day.
We are believing that her body doesn't rejecting the central-line. This would mean a new line in a new location with surgery. So please agree with us that Leah's body won't reject the central-line.
Leah also is have tummy distress either from chemo on Thursday June 6th or something else is bothering her tummy. We know our God is everso faithful and is with her every moment of the day. Her journey to healing has had detours, turns, valleys and mountain tops to climb but our God is with her on this journey. In the initial treatment Leah became Neutropenic and her leg calf developed the staff infection the doctors said she would never regain the full use of her leg that she would be at a range of 5, normal is 10 and she is at 12. This the range that you bend your ankle and stretch your calf muscle. God is her healer!
We know there is power in prayer and we thank everyone for your time in interceding for Leah. There will come a day when Leah reaches her destination on this Journey to Healing and your prayers, love and support will see her, Mom, Dad and Andy reach their destination for you are their Aaron and Hur.
There Is Power In Prayer,
Mom Mom Cohee
Can we also continue to pray for Chris from WV and Brianna Mallory 2 years old from DE.
Brianna will be having her BMT in July. Lets agree together that God's Healing manifestation will come forth in their bodies too for our God is our Healer. He is the God that Healeth Thee! Father we curse every cancer cell in their bone marrow to die in Jesus Name!
Dear Friends, Family, Co-workers and Brothers & Sisters in the Lord,
As many of you may know, Leah was diagnosed with A.L.L. (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) on February 19th. Since that diagnoses she has been treated and hospitalized for the Leukemia; neutropenia; a severe intestinal virus; a staph infection in her right calf muscle tissue, which spread down her leg and into the bone just above the ankle; and an allergic reaction to one of her antibiotics that caused high fever with severe headaches, cough, nausea, chills, and vomiting. She has had numerous procedures, operations and testing done during her stays at the hospital. While out of the hospital, we continue with weekly outpatient appointments for chemotherapy, spinal taps, blood transfusions, and etc.
Words can not express our sincere appreciation and gratefulness of your acts of kindness, gifts of love, and prayers. We have read Leah all of your emails, journal entries from Leah’s web page, and cards. We appreciate your words of encouragement, phone calls, prepared meals, groceries, gifts for Leah, gifts for Andy, cards, financial blessings, transportation, visits, sacrificing of your time to cover and help my class, phone cards, and most importantly, that you haven't forgotten us and that you continue to pray for us.
We know that it is God’s strength and your prayers that has gotten us this far in our journey. Leah has not had an easy journey through her induction phase of treatment. We have been told by the doctors that Leah seems to be an early responder; however, her induction phase has been more complicated than an average patient. We have just begun our treatment journey and would ask that you please continue to keep us in prayer. The devil wants to destroy our family, but God wants to prosper our family.
We can not fathom the love of Jesus Christ that has flowed through all of you. We continue to be amazed how God is using others to help meet our needs. To think that you all would want to help us leaves us in amazement, but isn't that the way His love is. May the Lord bless you all for the sacrifices you have made for our family. We love you all.
Sincerely,
Dale, Vickie, Andy & Leah Dixon
We are praising the Lord for there is Power in Prayer! Thank you for interceding for Leah and her family.
Leah was released from the hospital today and was able to go to Ocean City, MD at the Children's House By The Sea. She walked on the beach this evening and the water rolled over her feet, she is truly excited to be able to there.
We do need to pray.... the doctors are concerned that Leah's body may be rejecting her central-line. This isn't uncommon but this is not what we want for Leah. Rejecting the line would mean a new line with new surgery.
Can we agree together the God will protect the current central-line so her body doesn't reject it.... Also can we agree in prayer that God will protect every organ in her body.... even her mouth, throat, and stomach. Her mouth is improving day by day just as Jesus healed the 10 lepers and "they were healed as they went". The intensification phase begins on June 19th. Chemotherapy will increase and different drugs will be administered.
Can we also continue to pray for Chris from WV and Brianna from DE. Brianna will be having her BMT in July. Lets agree together that God's Healing manifestation will come forth in their bodies too for our God is our Healer. He is the God that Healeth Thee!
Can we pray for God's mercy and healing virtue to flow through Brianna's blood cursing every cancer cell in her blood to die for His glory to come forth in Jesus Name.
I would like to add 2 more children to your prayer list. A little boy named Chris from Berekley Springs, WV. Chris also has luekemia and he is 5 years old. Tyler Yoak, was able to go home no surgery and the Baseball Association will pick up the hospital expenses their insurance doesn't pay. Continue to pray for her Mom as she is recently widowed and this is trying time for mom and daughter. Mercy, Grace, Comfort and peace for mom for we know their is power in prayer!
We are sure thankful that our God is in control! Leah will definitely have enough to write a book about her "Journey to Healing" and the Mercy of God for our God is awesome!
We had a great visit with Leah on Friday, May 31st and for about 1 1/2 hours on Monday (today) before she had to go the hospital. Leah, Mom and Dad were in Ocean City, Maryland on vacation.... actually at the Children's House By the Sea through the "Make A Wish Org." a Free Stay. Her counts were great on Friday so the Doctors said go, Leah was so excited. Andy is at Camp Can Do for a 4 day adventure a get a way for siblings of siblings with cancer. He will return home on Tuesday, June 2nd.
I have watched her performance of "Back into His arms" about 5 times and cried each time. She also did a private performance just for me and I cried, it is awesome! Her classmates at Eagles Nest also were very anointed in their program. All of them were used by Jesus to bring glory to the Father.
Leah was also granted her Margu wig, plus Locks of Love will be making her a real hair wig. She is so exited! We just asked God to bless her with the Margu Wig but God has blessed above and beyond with a real hair wig.
Yes, I typed Leah is back at AI duPont Hospital 3A Room 3 as a precautionary. Leah started running a low grade fever on Friday and it spiked today to 101.3 and she has major mouth sores from the chemo.
We were so excited because on Friday her ANC had risen to 3,555 but today it is now 1008, which actually is normal for chemo, she should rebound soon. Her BMT final results came back and there are "0" cancer cells.
One of the chemo drugs was increased on Tues. the 27th of May and with the increase it can cause the mouth sores and the fever. She also had a reaction to a Band-Aid over her entryline which developed into a skin infection, an antibiotic cream has taken care of the skin infection. Her central-line also had a problem with being able to take blood samples that part has been resolved but the Doctor has ordered a culture of the line, her throat and mouth. They will also check her counts tomorrow if every thing improves and no infections or virus show up on the cultures she can go home in 48 hours, then Leah will be able to go back to Ocean City, Md and will have at least 2 days at the Children's House By the Sea.
So can we agree together that our God will intervene on her belief once again to bring the healing manifestation to her mouth, central line and the fever to be gone in Jesus Name.
The above pictures are of Leah in her new birthday dress she recieved as a birthday present. Leah celebrated her birthday all week long and was able to have a small party with a few friends on Saturday. She told her mom that this has been the best birthday she has ever had. I say, Praise the Lord and Amen to that!
Mom, Dad and Leah are staying at the Ronald McDonald house tonight as Leah is scheduled tomorrow for spinal chemo, IV chemo, and a bone marrow biopsy. We are believing that there are still 0 blasts or cancer cells. They will do blood work again before the biopsy, if her counts drop again it would mean that she is not producing blood cells again and could need a blood or platelet transfusion. Chemo will also change protocol if her counts are lower than a 1,000. So can we agree in prayer that her body will make her own blood cells by the power of Jesus Christ and we curse every cancer cell to die in Jesus Name.
Andy is staying with Miss Hunter... oh what a friend she is to Andy, Leah, Mom and Dad filling in the gap when needed. I lift her up for strength and to be blessed as she is a blessing to our family.
Leah wants to thank everyone for the birthday cards. She truly has been excited.
Leah performed her skit at a local church and also got a standing ovation. I can't wait to see the video of her performance, "Back into His arms". "She shall surely live and not die and declare the works of the Lord for she is wonderfully and fearfully created in His image."
Leah finished physical therapy today for her leg. Remember the gloom and doom doctor said she wouldn't have full range of motion in that leg. Well our God had other plans and His glory shinned through. Her leg is completely healed, she is walking and running.
Leah went to the Oncology Clinic today the 22nd for blood work. Her ANC count has dropped to 800 and other blood counts have dropped also. On Tuesday the 27th she is scheduled for spinal chemo, IV chemo, and a bone marrow biopsy. We are believing that there are still 0 blasts or cancer cells. Leah had another round of increased chemotherapy yesterday.
Please pray that she doesn't have a lot of side affects. Her ANC have
been good at 1300.
She is going to endeavor a project at school for the first time
since she was diagnosed with Leukemia in February. She is going to be in
her school program on Friday night and preform a mini drama by
herself. The Lord spoke to her and gave her the song and the ideas.
I do wish I could be there to see her. I know that the Lord will anoint
her for she shall declare the works of the Lord.
Just a quick add on:
May 17, 2003 7:30 AM EDT
Leah got a standing ovation for her performance. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. And she has been asked to perform at a church. She will do this providing she is feeling up to it. Normally by the 2nd to 3rd day after Chemo she starts feeling a little rough around the edges.
Leah will be 8 on May 23rd. If you would like to send a birthday card
to her here's her address:
WOW! Leah has been home almost 4 weeks now, May 10th.... and she is doing fine. She has been able to go to church, she attended an Easter egg hunt, has been out to eat, gone grocery shopping, made a visit to the Salisbury Zoo, and had a tutoring session at Miss Julie Hunter’s house. She has tutoring at her home at least 3 times a week. Our God is ever so awesome and we thank Him for her progress and her fortitude to persevere.
Leah had her second escalating chemo treatment with two different chemo drugs yesterday. Every ten days Leah’s chemo will be increased until her body can't handle it. Her next treatment will be May 15th. So far Leah is doing fine and her counts are good. Upon receiving the chemo she complained of a headache and later she complained of nausea. She is doing fine with anti-nausea medicine.
After this 60 day period, Leah will start her intensification period for an additional 60 days. She will be making trips to A.I. duPont several times a week for many different kinds of chemo treatments. This portion of therapy will be Leah’s most intense treatments for the Leukemia. Her counts are expected to drop very low again, which can cause complications.
Please continue to keep Leah in your prayers. Please pray that her organs will be protected through this therapy, that her body will tolerate the chemo with very little or no side effects, that the Leukemia cells will continue to die and no new Leukemia cells will grow. Please pray that her immune counts (ANC) will stay above 1000 so she does not become at risk for infections or complications.
Leah's leg is healing very well walking more and more on it daily......... and she is doing great in physical therapy. She has a couples of weeks left of therapy and then she will be reevaluated to see if she needs further therapy.
Please continue to pray for Mom - Vickie and Dad - Dale for the decisions that they have to make in the months ahead. Pray that they will continue to have faith that God will supply all their needs. They want to be yielding to God’s plans.
Leah, Mom - Vickie, Dad - Dale and Andy want to thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement. They couldn't make it with out your prayers and our Awesome God.
Check out the picture collages and the letter below from The Dixon's.
Praise the Lord! Leah has been home for two weeks now. She is doing just fine. She got to go to church, an Easter egg hunt, out to eat, grocery shopping, to the Salisbury Zoo, and a tutoring session at Miss Julie Hunter’s house. She worked all these events in before starting her new treatment regimen.
On Thursday, Leah started a 60 day period of escalating chemo treatments with two different chemos. Every ten days Leah’s chemo will be increased until her body can’t handle it. So far Leah is doing fine. Upon receiving the chemo she complained of a headache and later she complained of nausea. She is doing fine with anti-nausea medicine. On May 5th she will go for her 2nd escalating doses of chemo.
After this 60 day period, Leah will start her intensification period for an additional 60 days. She will be making trips to A.I. duPont several times a week for many different kinds of chemo treatments. This portion of therapy will be Leah’s most intense treatments for the Leukemia. Her counts are expected to drop very low again, which can cause complications.
Please continue to keep Leah in your prayers. Please pray that her organs will be protected through this therapy, that her body will tolerate the chemo with very little or no side effects, that the Leukemia cells will continue to die and no new Leukemia cells will grow. Please pray that her immune counts (ANC) will stay above 1000 so she does not become at risk for infections or complications.
Leah had an evaluation for physical therapy on Friday. Her insurance company will have to approve for Leah to have physical therapy sessions at home. Meantime, Mom and Dad are working with Leah to continue to strengthen and stretch her calf and ankle. Leah walked into church today with her walker and did not use the wheel chair! YEAH! The Lord is Good!
Please continue to pray for Mom - Vickie and Dad - Dale for the decisions that they have to make in the months ahead. Pray that they will continue to have faith that God will supply all their needs. They want to be yielding to God’s plans.
Leah, Mom - Vickie, Dad - Dale and Andy want to thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement. They couldn't make it with out your prayers and our Awesome God.
Dear Friends, Family, Co-workers and Brothers & Sisters in the Lord,
As many of you may know, Leah was diagnosed with A.L.L. (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) on February 19th. Since that diagnoses she has been treated and hospitalized for the Leukemia; neutropenia; a severe intestinal virus; a staph infection in her right calf muscle tissue, which spread down her leg and into the bone just above the ankle; and an allergic reaction to one of her antibiotics that caused high fever with severe headaches, cough, nausea, chills, and vomiting. She has had numerous procedures, operations and testing done during her stays at the hospital. While out of the hospital, we continue with weekly outpatient appointments for chemotherapy, spinal taps, blood transfusions, and etc.
Words can not express our sincere appreciation and gratefulness of your acts of kindness, gifts of love, and prayers. We have read Leah all of your emails, journal entries from Leah’s web page, and cards. We appreciate your words of encouragement, phone calls, prepared meals, groceries, gifts for Leah, gifts for Andy, cards, financial blessings, transportation, visits, sacrificing of your time to cover and help my class, phone cards, and most importantly, that you haven’t forgotten us and that you continue to pray for us.
We know that it is God’s strength and your prayers that has gotten us this far in our journey. Leah has not had an easy journey through her induction phase of treatment. We have been told by the doctors that Leah seems to be an early responder; however, her induction phase has been more complicated than an average patient. We have just begun our treatment journey and would ask that you please continue to keep us in prayer. The devil wants to destroy our family, but God wants to prosper our family.
We can not fathom the love of Jesus Christ that has flowed through all of you. We continue to be amazed how God is using others to help meet our needs. To think that you all would want to help us leaves us in amazement, but isn’t that the way His love is. May the Lord bless you all for the sacrifices you have made for our family. We love you all.
Sincerely,
Dale, Vickie, Andy & Leah Dixon
God is so good! Thank you for all your prayers.....
Leah went home today! After all the tests and negative results the doctors changed the antibiotic to a different one and praise God Leah's temperature is normal. The doctors aren't sure if it was the medication but we give all the praise to our Lord Jesus for He surely knew what was causing her symptoms and took care of it.
Leah was actually released from the hospital last night at 10:00 p.m. and the hospital made arrangements for Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy to stay at the Ronald McDonald House overnight. Leah had spinal fluid treatment in the clinic. This was the first treatment without being put to sleep. The doctors gave her a mild sedative and put local numbing cream on the area of the injections. Leah was scared but came through it fine. She was hungry after her spinal treatment.... this is a good sign!
Leah has an IV antibiotic 3 times a day for the next two weeks. She also is still wearing her leg brace, one hour off - two hours on and at bed time. She will be receiving physical therapy at home. She has come a long way in a short time in regaining strength to the calf muscle and thigh muscle.
Leah is now in the Classification Period of her treatment program. It's hard to believe that it has been 7 weeks since she was first diagnosed with A.L.L. on February 19th. She has approximately 122 weeks of treatments to go. We are praising God for His Healing Virtue!
Leah, Mom - Vickie, Dad - Dale and Andy want to thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement. They couldn't make with out your prayers and our Awesome God.
Day 9 of this hospital stay. Leah is still in the hospital, the doctors have run test upon test and have decided that Leah's fever, cough, nausea, and headache are the result of medication. 95% of the test which included cultures, a mri, cat scan, echo gram, xrays etc.... came back negative. The cat scan did reveal a spot in her intestinal tract which can just be an irritation. The final results of the cat scan should be in tomorrow.
Leah is doing slightly better. The doctors have lowered the dosage of 6MP and have changed the antibiotic to a different type. Can we agree together that Leah's body is able to tolerate the medications she takes and for God to protect her vital organs!
We are praising the Lord that her Blood Counts are great! And Leah's leg is getting better daily. She is a trooper even in the midst of feeling lousy, she is still working hard in physical therapy.
Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement.
The doctors are not sure if this is viral or a medication she is taking. Please pray.... that God will give wisdom and knowledge to the doctors. Leah has no appetite and is losing weight and she always feels nauseous. Can we agree together that the doctors will find out what is causing the fever, cough and nausea in Jesus' Name.
Leah is still in the hospital, the doctors have run test upon test and still have no clue of why Leah has a fever and a cough. We thought it was going away but the fever spiked again yesterday afternoon.
The doctors had more blood taken today to run more tests and she is scheduled for a MRI tomorrow of her leg. The doctors want to rule out that nothing is wrong with the muscle. If nothing shows up in the blood test and the MRI the doctors are thinking a medication she is taking could be causing the fever and the cough.
Please pray for Leah - today her appetite isn't good and she feels nauseous. We need her to eat so her leg will heal. Vickie is going to check with the doctors to see if the chemo she received this past Tuesday was increased dosage that may also be causing the nausea, fever and cough.
Leah is working very hard in physical therapy for her leg. And she is taking only Tylenol for the pain, she refuses to take any thing stronger.
We want to thank you for all your prayers. Can we agree together that the doctors will find out what is causing the fever, cough and nausea in Jesus' Name.
Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement.
Leah's fever is gone. Praise the Lord!
Her Blood Counts are up and this is great news as her body is fighting.
We are hoping she will be able to go home on April 3,2003.
We are still waiting for the culture results.
Leah had chemo in her spinal fluids on April 2nd.
She is progressing in physical therapy with her leg and has moderate pain.
The physical therapist checked out Leah's range of motion when she had the spinal procedure. He feels that she has lost some of the range of motion in the leg. But once again we believe the report of the Lord and know that He will take care of her leg muscle. Leah is walking more and more on her leg.
Again Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy want to thank you for your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement.
Just wanted to update you on Leah. She didn't have to have a blood transfusion on Friday. Her blood counts went up and so she went back home on Friday. God is Good!
We were able to go visit her this past weekend and took lots of pictures. I will have the pictures updated tomorrow at the website.
Yesterday she was admitted back into the hospital due to a fever. She started a low grade fever Friday night. Vickie kept Leah off Tylenol Saturday and Sunday which she takes for her leg as it is still very painful, the fever yesterday afternoon went up to 101.5. The doctors are checking cultures from her central line and from her leg. It will take 48 hours to see if anything should grow. This is precautionary as infections can be an ugly thing for her body. Her blood counts are up which is very good. We know God is in the midst of this and will see Leah through each day as we pray for her.
Leah has daily physical therapy for her leg. Her calf muscle and thigh muscle are tight and have to be stretched. This is very painful for Leah but she is a trooper and is working very hard.
Again Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love, visits, and cards of encouragements.
We have great news today from the bone marrow biopsy results. There are 0 blasts.... which means there are no cancer cells in Leah's bone marrow. Now one of her doctors would say this means "nothing" as the cancer cells can hide in other areas. Well now for me, I believe the report of the Lord and He says, "she is healed by the His stripes." We wait daily for her healing to manifest in her body.
Her ANC is up to 1008 but Leah has been off of one the chemo meds since Tuesday which has helped it to go up. Her platelets are at 256 and her White Blood Count is at 1.8. Leah will be getting a red blood cell transfusion tomorrow as her hemoglobin count is down to 7.2 We are not sure when the doctors will put her back on "Purinethol" this is a nasty drug with lots of side effects. Actually all the chemo has side effects some more than others. Pray that God will reduce the side effects and protect Leah.
Leah had a good day today, feeling fair. Please keep her leg in prayer it is still very painful and she must walk on it and do her physical therapy. She fell on her leg yesterday trying to walk. This will be called "No Pain-No Gain" if she doesn't use the leg she will have to have surgery. So please pray that the pain leaves.
Leah has started home school with her teacher Julie Hunter and she is excited. Once again Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for your continued prayers, gifts of love, and cards of encouragement.
Just a brief update:
Leah had her bone marrow biopsy and spinal tap plus chemo today. We should have the results sometime this week.
She made out well in physical therapy for her leg. It was a long day at the hospital but Praise the Lord Leah didn't have to stay.
Blood tests will be done again on Thursday and we will know her ANC count on that day.
The paper work finally got processed at the hopsital. Praise the Lord!
Leah is still having tummy problems. Leah takes 12 different prescription medications not counting over the counter items. So continue to pray for her tummy.
Day 31 of Leah's Induction Phase:
Leah's ANC count has dropped once again to under 300 and chemo has been stopped temporary. Today was a fair day for Leah, we just don't know from day to day how she will feel. Her leg is improving daily but she is not pain free. She is able to walk on it with the leg boot brace and a walker but this is very painful for her.
Mom, Dad and Leah are staying overnight at the Ronald McDonald House. Leah is scheduled early tomorrow for her bone marrow biopsy and spinal tap.
Vickie (Leah's Mom) has some specific prayer requests for Leah:
1. Can we agree that Leah's body is able to keep the ANC count around 1000 or that the Doctors agree to keep Leah on Neupogen after her Chemotherapy as this works for Leah. Leah's body currently hasn't been able to keep the ANC count up in the 1000 range. She needs the count to stay up so she doesn't become neutropenic again and pick up infections which cause complications.
2. The paper work for Medicaid has been stalled by the social worker at AI Dupont. So can we agree together that this paper work gets to the proper channel. Their out of pocket expenses for hospital, medications and lab work are expensive but once Medicaid kicks in it will pick their copays.
Leah's treatment plan is in the induction phase at this moment. In another month and half the treatment plan will be called Intensification Phase and the course of treatment changes. This will cause more stress on Leah's body. Leah will go through around 130 weeks of treatment which is approx. 2 1/2 years.
Day 29 of Leah's Induction Phase:
Yes, Leah is home but not feeling well. Her tummy has been upset. Leah is still not allowed to walk on her right leg. She uses a walker to stable herself as she hops on her left leg, she also has to wear a leg brace partially during the day and at night when see goes to sleep.
Leah didn't have the bone marrow biopsy nor the spinal tap yesterday. She is scheduled to go back on Tuesday for these. Continue to pray for her as I know you do.
Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement.
Leah was released from the hospital today, Praise the Lord! Her ANC count yesterday was 5800 from 780 after getting the Neupogen on Wed. She also received another injection of Neupogen on Thursday. The doctors are going to do the injections every other day at this time, this could change. This will be determined by the results from the bone marrow biopsy and the spinal tap that was done today. The cancer cells can multiply just as the ANC count go up. We are believing that this has not happened. The test results should be in on Monday. Leah received another chemo treatment today to protect her spinal fluids.
I will have another update tomorrow after I talk with Vickie this evening. They were enroute home when we talked around 6:00 pm. Again Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love, and cards of encouragement.
Day 26 of Leah's Induction Phase:
The bone culture of Leah's ankle came back with negative results for infection, Praise the Lord! Leah's right leg where she had the muscle biopsy (her calf) is draining. The doctor's did a suction of the infection in the calf and ordered a culture, the test results should be back tomorrow or Friday. We are also waiting for a culture to make sure the virus that was in Leah's body when she went into the hospital on March 4th has run its course and is gone from her body.
Leah's ANC has dropped to 780 today, the doctors are putting her back on Neupogen as her count was 1440 yesterday and down to 780 today this is a rapid drop and the doctors don't want her become neutropenic. Leah's intestinal tract has also slowed down eliminating waste very slowly which is a result of the morphine. Her pancreas is also enlarged but tests showed everything is normal.
Leah is in physical therapy to learn how to walk without using her right leg. She is not allowed to put pressure on the leg at this time. The leg is still painful but Leah is only taking Tylenol for pain she is determined not to have to take morphine.
Leah is scheduled for a bone marrow biopsy and a spinal tap on Friday. Test results should then be back on Monday. Leah is very homesick and just sad right now which more than likely is a result of medication she is taking. Please pray for her, she has been through a lot these last few weeks.
Again Leah, Mom, Dad and Andy want to thank everyone for your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragement.
Leah's ANC count went up to 1800 yesterday and today it went up to 2800. We praise the Lord because it went from 0 last week to 2800. Our God Reigns!
The cultures from Leah's leg surgery showed no infection but her leg is draining from her calf area where she had the first biopsy.The doctors are glad as whatever was there doesn't belong there. She is also being weaned off the morphine.
She had an Xray of her stomach today as she has had a lot of tummy pain. She also had another bone scan on her leg today. I will let you know the results as soon as we find out. But we are praising and rejoicing in the Lord for her blood count.
Again Leah, Mom, Dad & Andy thank you for all your prayers, gifts of love and cards of encouragements. We couldn't go through this without God or the Body of Christ.
This is a new day for Leah's journey to healing. The surgery last night went well on her leg in fact she wanted pizza when she got back to her room, this was about 12:00 midnight. We stand amazed at her fortitude. She is in intense pain and is on morphine every 3 hours plus she is a little grumpy. We are waiting for the test results of the cultures from her leg. Hopefully she will resume physical therapy in about a week or two. Leah started a new medication called Neupogen (I won't tell you what its made from) to increase her white blood cell and neutrophil count last night. Leah also had another chemo treatment today and this is day 21 of her induction period. Continue to pray for her as she continues her journey to healing.
Please keep in mind that this is the short version of her journey.... this journey has had a large map with many detours and change of directions. But the most amazing thing is that God is on the journey with Leah.
Leah, Mom, Dad & Andy again want to thank everyone for your prayers, support, gifts of love and cards. We could not make this journey without the body of Christ.
Leah went for leg surgery at 9:00 pm tonight east coast time. The MRI showed inflammation in the bone. The doctors are going to scrap out the infection in the bone and surrounding area and insert a drainage tube. Please pray that the staph infection hasn't damaged the growth plate in the bone of her leg. The doctors did start her on a medication to increase her white blood cells. The reason they have waited this long is that in giving her this medication will also increase the cancer cells. Can you please pray in agreement with me that God gives Leah a supernatural miracle in her body, protecting the growth plate in leg and kills the infection in her leg and every cancer cell in her blood. I will let everyone know the outcome of her surgery.
Leah is still severely neutropenic which means she can not fight off any infections, viruses, bacteria etc. Her count is at 40, the anc count needs to double daily. The biopsy from Leah's right leg showed that Leah has a staph infection in the muscle tissue which is a very serious complication and now has traveled to her ankle and has caused the leg to swell with intense pain, she is on morphine for the pain. She will have a another MRI either tonight or in the morning. The doctors do not want to have drain the fluid in her right leg, they want her body to fight the staph infection. Leah needs a miracle from God to supernaturally increase her neutrophils and destroy the staph infection in her right leg.
Please note this is not the normal for children with A.L.L. but Leah's body isn't producing enough neutrophils which do the fighting. Above are normal blood readings and this is what we need for Leah. The doctors can give her medication to increase her neutrophil count but this is a last resource as with draining the fluid from her leg which is extremely painful.
The bone scan showed no infection in the right leg bone, Praise the Lord. Leah will have at least two to three more weeks of IV antibiotics, she is now on 4 different ones. We are not sure at this time when Leah will be able to go home from the hospital. Leah is still getting her Chemotherapy treatments as this is her Induction period from there she will go to a different level of Chemotherapy.
Friday March 7th
The doctors got the results back from the mri on Leah's right leg and it showed an inflammation and the doctors made a decision to do a biopsy of the muscle tissue from her leg. They are now waiting on the biopsy results. Leah has been through so much... her white blood count is 0, her anc level is 77 down from 80 yesterday and her hair is now falling out. Thank God the cancer cells are down to 1 to 2%. Without God and prayer I do not know how any family makes it through this process of chemotherapy and watching their child suffer.
Saturday March 8th
A preliminary result is in from the biopsy of Leah's right leg, she has myositis infection of the muscle tissue - myonecrosis. This is a very serious complication - she is now on antibiotics. Leah is severely neutropenic - no white blood cells and the low anc count at 77. Chemotherapy kills the cancer cells and the good white blood cells which Leah needs to fight off infections. At the present time the chief of oncology can not give Vickie and Dale a date when Leah will be able to come home from the hospital. The final results of the pathology report will be in Monday.
Please pray for them financially.... One of Leah's meds with their insurance copay is 150.00 a month, that is just one this doesn't even include Mom & Dad's other out of pocket expenses to travel back and forth to the hospital.
Leah's body has been a quick responder to chemotherapy. The Doctors expected a 5% ratio but Leah has only 1 to 2% remaining cancer cells. Praise the Lord!
Leah was admitted back into the hospital on March 4th.
Leah's immune system is extremely low and she has a viral infection. She also received a platelet transfusion last evening as her platelet count was low. Tomorrow she is scheduled for a MRI for her right leg as she has a lot of pain in the leg, this is precautionary to make sure there is no blood clot in her leg. The low immune system and the platelet transfusion are not uncommon in children receiving chemotherapy as good cells are attacked by the chemotherapy. An ANC (absolute neutrophil count) of over 1000 is the goal for Leah but currently she is at 80. When her count is this low visitors have to wear a gown, gloves and mask. Lets agree together in prayer that God will increase her immune system and increase the anc to over 1000.
Leah had a full day at AI Dupont Clinic. She had a bone marrow test, a spinal fluid test and chemotherapy. We will know the test results on Monday, March 3rd. We are expecting daily miracles!
Leah was given a "Courage Hat" by Annie. Check out the pictures. Annie also has Leukemia and was given a Courage Hat by a friend. The Courage Hat need small pins of anykind but the clasp type. Pray over each pin that Leah will have courage for her Journey to Healing when she has her tests.
You can mail your pins to her or give them to Miss Hunter, Leah's teacher.
Update:
We haven't heard as of yet if Leah is in remission we should know tomorrow morning and we are expecting a miracle. Leah does need our prayers as the chemotherapy she received on Friday has been very harsh on her body. She has been vomiting, diarrhea and a lot of body and joint pain. I have posted new pictures of Leah at her website.
We are praising our Lord that Leah was able to go home today. Leah did have nausea and vomiting this evening. We are accounting this to the excitement of the day and to the car ride home from the hospital. This was a full day for her. Please continue to remember her in your daily prayers.
In the next few sentences I don't want to scare our young readers but I want us to be informed so we can come against the hindering forces of darkness.
I want us to pray for children in general... Why?
Each day, 46 children are diagnosed with some type of cancer
One in 330 children will develop some type cancer by age 20
Although cure rates are steadily increasing, 35% of children will die
Leukemia has a cure rate of 90% today but that mean 10% of the children will die
Cancer remains the number one disease killer of children; more than genetic anomalies, cystic fibrosis, and AIDS combined
This was a scary day for Leah. She had two chemo injections in both of her legs. The nurse numbed the injection site and than an hour later she received the chemo injections in both legs at the same time by two nurses.
Some of Leah's chemotherapy is through her central line near her heart, some of her medication is oral and some of her medication is by injections.
Leah is doing well and looks to going home very soon. Then she will go to the clinic at Alfred I. Dupont 2 to 3 times weekly for testing and chemo therapy. It will be awhile before she can go back to school.
